Your responsibility

Historical research within the DFG-funded research project “Practicioners' knowledge versus natural science: trichromatic printing and physical colour theory in early 18th century.” The project examines the tension between Newton’s theory of colour (1704) and the elder trichromatic theory that was incompatible with Newton’s theory, but had a triumphant practical success with the emergence of full-colour printing based on three primary colours around 1710. The project focusses on the works and texts of the printer Gautier d’Agoty and on relevant texts from natural philosophy and the French Encyclopédie. The project explores the emergence of a knowledge constellation that would shape the discourse on colour in the 18th and 19th centuries. It also widens our understanding of the interaction between practitioners' and academic knowledge in epistemic, social and cultural dimensions. The project offers the option to write a PhD thesis.
