Fachbereich Mathematik und Informatik - Institut für Mathematik Applied Analysis Group

This position is part of the Applied Analysis group under supervision of Prof. Dr. Marita Thomas at Freie Universität Berlin (https://www.mi.fu-berlin.de/en/math/groups/ag-applied- analysis/index.html ) and part of SFB/Transregio 388 (Website: https://sites.google.com/view/trr388/ ).
SFB/Transregio 388 investigates the interplay between rough analysis and stochastic dynamics. Central aspects include rough paths and subsequent developments for nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations. The theory of signatures and rough volatility also provides important connections to algebra, statistics, and financial mathematics.

Tasks

Project B09 „Mean field theories and scaling limits of nonlinear stochastic evolution systems“ is devoted to the development of reduced descriptions of the effective time-evolution of macroscopic variables in large-scale interacting stochastic processes. For this, methods from stochastic analysis and analytical methods for nonlinear partial differential equations, variational convergence and homogenization techniques will be employed. In the focus of the project are applications to biological (neural) networks, networks of reaction-diffusion systems, and stochastic fluid models, with sparse and/or heterogeneous connectivity, multistability features, multiple time-scales, and/or general types of random forcing terms. Also coherent structures under the impact of mean-field interactions and/or noise will be investigated. This project provides the opportunity to acquire a doctoral degree.

Requirements

The successful candidate holds a completed degree in Mathematics (Master, Diploma or equivalent).

Desirable:
Expected is a strong background in stochastic analysis and mathematical analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations. The research results obtained within this position are to be published in scientific journals and to be presented on international conferences. Good language skills in English and German are desirable and, if needed, the participation in German courses offered by the Freie Universität Berlin is encouraged.

How to apply

FYI: a complete set of application documents should contain a motivation letter with information on the research areas, a CV, a publication list and copies of your Master and Ph. D. certificates in one document.
