Research Assistant

part-time employment may be possible

Your responsibility

An externally funded research project at TU Berlin is investigating the development of sustainable materials and technologies for smart, connected e-textiles. The focus is on the development, characterisation and integration of novel materials into textile electronic systems.

We are looking for a candidate with a background in electrical engineering to support the electronic system integration, construction and characterisation of demonstrators. The role lies at the interface of circuit development, embedded systems, flexible electronics, textile interconnects, EMC and metrological evaluation.

Your responsibilities:

  • Development and integration of electronic components for connected e-textiles, wearables and flexible demonstrators
  • Circuit design and layout of electronic modules, test structures and flexible printed circuit boards
  • Integration of sensors, microcontrollers, communication units and power supplies into textile or flexible system environments
  • Development, commissioning and testing of embedded systems for data acquisition, control and wireless communication
  • Assessment of electromagnetic compatibility in wearables, smart textiles, textile cables and interconnects
  • Construction, testing, optimisation and documentation of prototypes and demonstrators
  • Collaboration with partners in materials science, textile engineering, microsystems technology and electronics development

Your profile

  • A successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering / Microsystems Engineering / Mechatronics / Computer Engineering / Medical Technology with a focus on electrical engineering, or a comparable subject area.
Knowledge and experience in at least two of the following areas:
  1. Circuit design and layout, ideally using Altium Designer or comparable tools
  2. Embedded systems, microcontroller technologies and wireless communication, particularly Bluetooth Low Energy; ideally with a focus on medical applications / embedded design
  3. EMC in wearables, smart textiles, textile cables, interconnects / EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) and flexible electronic systems
  4. Knowledge of process technologies for the assembly and interconnection of electronics, particularly flexible electronics
  5. Electrical measurement technology, characterisation, commissioning and troubleshooting of electronic systems
  • Good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills
  • Experience with e-textiles, smart textiles, wearables or flexible electronics desirable
  • Experience with sensor integration, low-power design or miniaturised electronics desirable
  • Knowledge of automated measurement data acquisition and data analysis desirable
  • Basic understanding of sustainable material and technology development desirable
  • Structured, independent, and self-reliant working style desirable
  • Willingness to take on technical responsibility for defined tasks desirable
  • Ability to work effectively in teams within interdisciplinary project environments desirable
  • Ability of careful documentation of results, processes and technical decisions desirable
  • Experience in interdisciplinary research and development projects, project management, project acquisition (grants and industrial contracts) and technical leadership desirable
