Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Faculty of Life Sciences, Albrecht Daniel Thaer-Institute of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences

Junior Professorship (W1) with tenure track W2 for “Food Demand in Sustainable Agrifood Systems”

Tasks

This position is a tenure-track position. No later than 15 months before the end of the tenure-track professorship, an evaluation procedure is initiated with the aim of determining whether the performance requirements for a lifetime appointment have been met. Tenure-track professors at HU Berlin are expected to perform in the areas of research, academic teaching, participation in academic self-government, support of early-career researchers and the acquisition of personnel management skills. The specific performance requirements are determined in the course of the appointment procedure and are based on the framework catalogue (https://www.hu-berlin.de/fileadmin/Mediathek/Zentrale_Seiten/Forschung___Lehre/Forschung/Dokumente/Berufung_Tenure_Track_Satzung_2023.pdf)

The junior professorship is funded by the Commission for the Advancement of Women at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

We are looking for an excellent, ambitious and cooperative junior researcher to conduct research as a junior professor on the role of food demand for the sustainability transformation of European and global agricultural and food systems. The professorship builds a bridge between microeconomic content such as nutritional behavior of private households and optimization processes in the processing of raw materials in the food industry on the one hand and sectoral and macroeconomic interrelationships in the global agricultural and food system on the other.

The researcher has experience in the integration and analysis of extensive data sets, for example on individual dietary behavior and existing manufacturing processes or on sectoral data for the economic modeling of food demand in European and global agricultural and food systems. Another prerequisite is the ability to map and analyze the decisions of the food industry with regard to the composition of food as well as consumption decisions of private households in agricultural, sectoral or macroeconomic models, and to estimate the effects of food policy measures on the agricultural system and the natural environment.

Requirements

We are seeking an excellent early career researcher who has post-doctoral experience in conducting research on the above topics and academic publishing with international visibility. Experience in collaborating with other disciplines within and outside the agricultural, social and life sciences is desirable, as is experience in the successful acquisition of third-party funding, cooperation in project consortia and working in international, diverse teams. The successful candidate will have didactic competence and teaching experience in the field of agricultural economics, ideally also in teaching quantitative economic models. Willingness to teach in English and German is a prerequisite (possibly after a period of time to learn the language sufficiently), as is the willingness to participate actively in university self-administration. Willingness to continuously develop teaching and to cooperate intensively within the Thaer Institute, in the Faculty of Life Sciences and across faculty boundaries is expected.

The professorship is located in Berlin-Mitte.

Applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in conjunction with § 102c combined with § 102a of the ‘Berliner Hochschulgesetz’.
