Faculty II - Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Institute of Physics and Astronomy / Ultrafast Nanoscience

Research Assistant - 0.75 working-time

There is the possibility of pursuing a doctorate.

About us

As part of the research project, we offer the opportunity to pursue a doctorate in experimental condensed matter physics focused on electron, spin, exciton, and orbital dynamics in two-dimensional magnetic materials and their heterostructures. Two-dimensional magnets and magnetic heterostructures are promising building blocks for future spintronic and optoelectronic technologies. Understanding their microscopic electronic and magnetic dynamics is a key challenge in modern materials research.

The project will be carried out in the team of Dr. Tommaso Pincelli within the “Ultrafast Nanoscience” group of Prof. Ralph Ernstorfer. This highly diverse and international team employs state-of-the-art ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy to study a wide range of ultrafast phenomena in condensed matter systems.

This position is embedded in the collaborative research center “CRC/TRR227 – Ultrafast Spin Dynamics”, which provides an exceptional research and training environment for PhD candidates. You will meet and befriend peers across leading research groups in the field, building scientific expertise and professional networks that support your long-term academic and career development.

Your responsibility

Experimental work is done in a team environment. The applicant is then expected to pursue their research work independently.

  • Conduct ultrafast experiments in the group’s labs on a self-defined research topic
  • Take part in the team’s experiments (locally and in international facilities)
  • Pursue independent research on acquired results: data analysis, interpretation, communication (e.g. publications), presentation (international conferences)

Your profile

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diploma or equivalent) in physics or a very related field
  • Good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment (is desired)
  • Programming skills: Python

We are looking for highly motivated, curious, and enthusiastic, researchers with excellent academic records and strong interests in fundamental materials’ physics, ultrafast science, and their potential intersection. Research experience at BSc or MSc level in at least one of the following areas is desirable:

  • Spectroscopy methods (optical, X-ray, or electron-based), particularly photoelectron spectroscopy
  • Femtosecond lasers or ultrafast science
  • Magnetism & spin phenomena
  • Ultra-high vacuum technology
  • Non-linear optics and high harmonics generation
  • Software skills: High-dimensional data processing and/or control software e.g. Labview

How to apply

Interested candidates are requested to send a letter of motivation, a CV and a complete list of publications together with the contact details of two references to Dr. Tommaso Pincelli (tommaso.pincelli@tu-berlin.de), quoting the reference number in the E-mail subject.

By submitting your application via email you consent to having your data electronically processed and saved.
