Research Associate (PostDoc) - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

The Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1265 “Re-Figuration of Spaces”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) at Technische Universität Berlin since 2018, investigates the transformation of socio-spatial orders observable since the late 1960s. The position is located in subproject A02 “Children’s Spatial Knowledge: Hybrid Spatial Practices of Young People in Politics and Planning”. This project examines how children’s spatial knowledge is shaped by their use of digital media and explores policies and planning practices that deliberately seek to influence these hybrid practices. The research contexts are China and Germany. The project focuses on four key areas: policy analyses of planning and political measures that shape young people’s everyday practices; a case study in Shanghai using narrative mapping to explore children’s spatial practices; the continuation of a qualitative meta-analysis on changing spatial knowledge of young people; and mapping workshops with practitioners in China and Germany.

• Independent academic work within subproject A02 “Children’s Spatial Knowledge” as part of CRC 1265
• Conception, preparation, conduction, and follow-up of participatory and empirical research in China and Germany
• Management, analysis, and interpretation (textual and visual) of empirical material
• Advancement of theoretical and conceptual discourses in spatial and planning theory
• Presentation and publication of research results in academic outlets (including international peer-reviewed journals) and at conferences
• Communication of research results to broader audiences (including contributions to science communication)
• Contribution to project management
• Participation in the interdisciplinary work of the CRC and the overarching responsibility of coordinating networking activities with the CRC's associated members and alumni

• Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) and PhD in urban, regional, or spatial planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, urban sociology, geography, or a related discipline
• In-depth knowledge of academic research, particularly in the collection and analysis of qualitative empirical data
• Experience in academic publishing (peer-reviewed or equivalent)
• Very good written and spoken skills in at least two of the following languages: German, English, Mandarin
• Interest in contributing to CRC 1265, its interdisciplinary research agenda, and the specific focus of subproject A02 (see description above) desirable
• Willingness to undertake research stays in China and research-related travel within Germany
• Strong teamwork skills, flexibility, independence, organizational ability, and willingness to collaborate within the CRC desirable
• Research experience in international or intercultural contexts, ideally with a focus on China advantageous
• Experience with participatory research formats advantageous
• Knowledge of visual methods in spatial research (e.g. mental mapping, narrative mapping) desirable
• Knowledge of visualization techniques, methods, and software desirable
• Experience with MAXQDA or comparable software advantageous
• Experience in interdisciplinary collaborative research; affinity for interdisciplinary approaches advantageous
