Junior Professorship for “Emerging Christianity with focus on New Testament and non-canonical literature”

from 1. April 2027.

Tasks

This position is a tenure-track position from W1 to W2. No later than 15 months before the end of the tenure-track professorship, an evaluation procedure is initiated with the aim of determining whether the performance requirements for a lifetime appointment have been met. Tenure-track professors at HU Berlin are expected to perform in the areas of research, academic teaching, participation in academic self-government, support of early-career researchers and the acquisition of personnel management skills. The specific performance requirements are determined in the course of the appointment procedure and are based on the framework catalogue (https://www.hu-berlin.de/de/forschende/tenuretrack/dokumente/hu_tt_rahmenkatalog_btts-2023.pdf).

Requirements

The professorship engages research and teaching on Early Christianity with a profile in the entire field of the New Testament (NT) and the non-canonical writings. It involves research on the New Testament and the literatures of early Christianity (1st-4th. century). A research focus will be on the study of non-canonical literature and the reception of those writings that were canonized as the New Testament.

The duties of the junior professorship include teaching courses, supervising exam papers, diploma, bachelor's and master's theses as well as doctoral candidates. Supporting the overall development of the Faculty of Protestant Theology is required, along with engaging in academic administrative processes. In addition to acquiring and implementing third-party funded projects, the faculty member is expected to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation with faculties and institutes at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and other research institutions in the broader region of Berlin as well as with the growing international network of the Faculty of Protestant Theology.

Requirements for appointment are a completed degree in Protestant theology or other relevant subjects, pedagogical aptitude and the particular capability to carry out in-depth independent academic work, proven by an outstanding and relevant doctorate in the field. Research and teaching experience in these research areas should be demonstrated.

The applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in conjunction with § 102c combined with § 102a of the ‘Berliner Hochschulgesetz’.
