Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Department of History

Junior Professorship for ‘History of Science’ (W1)

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Department of History, invites applications for a Junior Professorship for ‘History of Science’ (W1) from 1 October 2025.

Tasks

This is a W3 tenure track position. In order to verify whether the individual performance meets the requirements of a permanent employment, an evaluation process will be opened not later than five years of service. Tenure track professors at the HU Berlin are expected to carry out research and teach, as well as be active on various university committees, in promotion of young scientists and acquire leadership and management skills. The concrete requirements out of the framework catalogue [https://www.hu-berlin.de/de/forschende/tenuretrack/dokumente/hu_tt_rahmenkatalog_btts-2023.pdf] will be specified in the course of the appointment process.

Applicants are expected to represent the history of science in research and teaching and to actively participate in interdisciplinary exchange within the department, the faculty, and the university. The history of science is understood to encompass the history of knowledge. The temporal focus of the professorship lies in the modern era (16th to 21st century). The holder of the professorship is expected to actively participate in the Center for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences "Applied Humanities" as well as in the department's research focus on "Mediality and Digitality". A research and teaching profile demonstrating independent thinking and methodical innovation is expected. Excellent English language skills are mandatory; German language skills are highly desirable but may also be acquired after the start of the professorship.

With this professorship, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin aims to promote young academics in the early stages of their careers. The junior professorship is initially limited to three years. lt is renewable for a further three years based on the candidate's performance and agreement to the extension. After normally six years, the position becomes a tenured professorship if the evaluation criteria defined in writing during the tenure track process and the hiring requirements for a tenured professorship are met.

Requirements

The applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in conjunction with § 102c combined with § 102a of the ‘Berliner Hochschulgesetz’.
