The John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies (JFKI) is an interdisciplinary research and teaching institute at the Freie Universität Berlin. The six disciplines represented at the institute, the numerous scholarship and exchange programs as well as the research library, which is unique in Europe and focuses on North America, enable first-class studies that combine scientific depth with disciplinary diversity.
The position is assigned to the Chair of North American Literature (Prof. Dr. Stefanie Mueller) at the John-F.-Kennedy Institute and is available for up to 6 years (fixed term), starting March 1, 2025. It addresses early-career researchers in American Literary Studies who seek a post- doctoral degree (Habilitation) and who have a research interest in the Environmental Humanities, among others.

Tasks

  • Developing and conducting an independent research project in environmental humanities, with a special focus on climate change.
  • Contributing to the Chair’s research focus on “Climate Change in Literature.”
  • Teaching in BA and MA North American Literature.
  • Publication of research results.
  • Administrative duties.
    The position serves the applicant's own scientific qualification.

Requirements

Requirements:

  • A university degree and doctorate in American Studies / North American literature.

Desirable:

  • An above-average university degree and doctorate in American Studies / North American literature.
  • Previous teaching experience in American Studies/North American literature.
  • Interest in questions of literary theory, pop culture, or intermediality.
  • Expertise in narratology, more-than-human studies, affect theory.
  • Interest in and ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Administrative experience.
