Department of Musicology and Media Studies

Full Professorship for ‘Media Theories’ (W3)

The Department of Musicology and Media Studies in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences invites applications for a Full Professorship for ‘Media Theories’ (W3) starting as soon as possible.

Tasks

Given in the plural as “media theories,” the specialization of this position reflects the wide range of theoretical approaches taken by media studies today and the field’s pronounced interdisciplinary orientation. The successful candidate will have an innovative media theoretical profile and be internationally connected. We are looking for a scholar with proven expertise in research and teaching who applies a media theory lens to reflect on historical and current developments in the areas of media technology, media infrastructures, and artificial intelligence, as well as the global political challenges posed by these changes. We explicitly welcome interdisciplinary approaches bridging the fields of media theory, media philosophy, media anthropology, and newer methods of science and technology studies, artificial intelligence studies, postcolonial studies, diversity studies, and environmental studies. Methodologically, the successful candidate is invited to combine theoretical and practical approaches from media archaeology, media ethnography, or critical code studies, using the laboratories and experimental spaces (media archaeological collection, Signal Lab, media theater, media studio, media technical workshop) available in the Department of Musicology and Media Studies at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Requirements

Internationally recognized publications and experience in acquiring and managing third-party funded projects, as well as in academic teaching and self-administration, are expected.

Applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in accordance with § 100 of the `Berliner Hochschulgesetz`.
