Professor (W1TTW2) History, Societies and Politics of Northern Europe

The Faculty of Language, Literature and Humanities at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin seeks to appoint a Professor (W1TTW2) History, Societies and Politics of Northern Europe from October 1st, 2028 and limited for 6 years.

Tasks

This position is a tenure-track position. No later than 15 months before the end of the tenure- track professorship, an evaluation procedure is initiated with the aim of determining whether the performance requirements for a lifetime appointment have been met. Tenure-track professors at HU Berlin are expected to perform in the areas of research, academic teaching, participation in academic self-government, support of early-career researchers and the acquisition of personnel management skills. The chair is based at the Department of Northern European Studies and represents the full scope of the field of the modern history, societal structures and present political developments of Northern Europe, in both research and teaching, and in close collaboration with the other chairs at the Department of Northern European Studies (Scandinavian Medieval Studies, Scandinavian Linguistics and Scandinavian Literatures).

Responsibilities include teaching in all relevant study programmes (BA Scandinavian Studies, MA Scandinavian Studies, and academic governance. The candidate is furthermore expected to participate in study programmes in the Historical and Social Sciences). The position requires active involvement in promoting the department’s teaching and research profile, as well as a willingness to engage in inter- and transdisciplinary co-operation (including applications for external funding), within the faculty and with other relevant institutes, at both national and international level.

Requirements

The successful candidate is expected to have an internationally recognised research profile, showing a solid publication record, talks and keynotes at international conferences, and a strong international network. Teaching and research in the multilingual environment that is the Department of Northern European Studies furthermore requires the successful candidate to be able to teach in at least one Continental Scandinavian language as well as in English. Fluency in German, if insufficient, is expected to be acquired within two years upon appointment.

conjunction with § 102a combined with § 102c of the ‘Berliner Hochschulgesetz’.
