About us
The “Applied Geochemistry of Terrestrial Systems” research group at TU Berlin investigates the properties and reactions of rocks, minerals, fluids, and melts, as well as their interactions within the Earth’s crust and upper mantle. Our research always focuses on application-oriented basic research. Our goal is to contribute to solving practical problems through an in-depth understanding of mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry. Observations from laboratory experiments complement natural findings. Experimental and natural samples are characterized using a variety of instrumental methods (including X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and gas chromatography) to determine their chemical, physical, and structural properties.
We are seeking a candidate to lead, operate, and further develop our laser-ICP-MS laboratory (Agilent 8900 Triple Quad & Teledyne Excimer Laser Ablation System). The position is assigned to the research area “Applied Geochemistry of Terrestrial Systems.”
Your responsibility
- Contribute to research and teaching in the field of Applied Geochemistry of Terrestrial Systems
- Manage, operate, maintenance, and further develop the methodology of the laser ICP-MS laboratory; supervise researchers in the field of laser ICP-MS;
- Teach in the German-language Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in “Geotechnologie”, including
supervising BSc and MSc theses and conducting field and laboratory courses - Development of an independent research profile in mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry, including the publication of scientific results in peer-reviewed journals and the acquisition of external funding
The position offers the opportunity to conduct research in the diverse fields of mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry using the comprehensive laboratory facilities at the Institute of Applied Geosciences, as well as the opportunity to develop innovative research projects and analytical and experimental methods in a multidisciplinary research environment.
Your profile
- Successfully completed scientific university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in
geosciences, doctorate in the field of mineralogy/geochemistry/petrology or related subjects; - La-ICP-MS experiences;
- The ability to teach in German and/or in English is required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills.
- Knowledge of analytical methods, particularly Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, is preferred;
- Experience with research projects and securing external funding in the group’s research area is desirable;
- Willingness to support the research group in securing external funding is desirable;
- Ideally, you have teaching experience and demonstrate expertise in issues related to gender equality and diversity;
- Participation in institute committees is desirable
