The AHRC/DFG funded project “Craft Interactions in a New Kingdom industrial landscape (Egypt, 1550–1069 BCE)” is seeking to employ a post-doctoral research fellow for a period of 2,5 years, starting in June 2025. This project examines cross-craft interactions at the Egyptian site of Amarna in Middle Egypt, focussing on metals and vitreous materials, by means of materials analysis, excavation and experimentation. We are searching for a candidate with a strong background in Egyptian archaeology and a focus on material science.

Tasks
- The successful candidate will be based at Freie Universität Berlin. They will conduct materials analysis (glass, faience, pigments, metals; mainly SEM-EDX and XRF) and participate in excavation and post-excavation work at Amarna.
- The candidate will conduct their own research project within the framework of the overall project.
- The successful candidate will contribute to, and act as lead author for publications within the framework of the project.
- They will co-organise scientific workshops in Berlin and Cairo.
Requirements
Completed university degree; PhD in Archaeology / Egyptology / Archaeological Science
Desirable:
- Documented excavation experience in Egypt and/or Sudan
- documented interest in settlement archaeology and/or industrial archaeology of the Late Bronze Age
- in-depth understanding of stratigraphy and Harris Matrix
- analytical experience with ancient vitreous materials, pigments and/or metals
- experience with SEM-EDX analysis
- experience with (handheld) XRF
- (willingness to develop) A working knowledge of Egyptian Arabic
- excellent level of English (C1)
- proficiency in Egyptian Arabic
- proficiency of German (B2 or C1)
- experience working in a museum environment
- experience studying large archaeological assemblages
- organisational skills
