The EU project GlycoSpec aims to investigate the reaction mechanism in glycosylation, which is crucial for building oligosaccharides. For this purpose, a detailed structural analysis of the sugar intermediate, the glycosyl cation, is required. The approach involves using a cryogenic helium droplet instrument to capture the intermediate in the gas phase. Subsequently, a laser irradiates the target ion, revealing its vibrational pattern. This mass spectrometry-based technology provides a snapshot of the SN1 mechanism. A series of chemical reactions are then conducted to correlate the gas-phase structure with the synthesis in solution.
