Research Assistant permanent position - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

as Head of the Laboratory for Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics
part-time employment may be possible

Tasks

Organisation and coordination of the operation of the laboratory for engineering geology and rock mechanics, preparation of work plans, budget management, maintenance and modernisation of the infrastructure and field equipment including drones, scientific and methodological development, cooperation in the installation and modernisation of the laboratory for rock mechanics.

Independent implementation of and participation in courses in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Geotechnology and Engineering Geology with a focus on engineering geology laboratory and field investigations, GIS methods, data science and geohazards. Further development of courses and participation in the development of degree programmes.

Independent research and development of new research topics in the field of engineering geology. Acquisition, realisation and management of third-party funded projects and support in the supervision of doctoral candidates and students. Publication and presentation of research results. Establishment of national and international co-operations.

Supporting the head of the department in the strategic development of the department and administrative management of the department.

Requirements

Successfully completed scientific university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in the field of applied geosciences or related subjects, doctorate in the field of engineering geology or related subjects; professional competence can also be demonstrated by several years of proven practical experience.

Experience with the development of own investigation programs in research projects and implementation of these in the laboratory, as well as guidance of students or staff is desirable.
Special aptitude for teaching in engineering geology, proven by several years of teaching portfolio in engineering geology and positive teaching evaluations. Ability to teach courses in German in particular, but also in English. Proficiency in written and spoken German and English.

Independent research profile in engineering geology, proven by successful acquisition and management of third-party funded projects (also as independent PI), and own publications in international peer-reviewed journals, activity as editor and/or reviewer for journals at least in this research field and other invited lectures.

Further training and experience in the development and implementation of gender and diversity measures, e.g. in teaching or in research areas.

After graduating from university, at least three years of academic or specialised practical work in a full-time employment relationship.

Desired:

Very good skills and ideally also teaching experience in engineering geology laboratory and field tests, GIS, data analysis in engineering geology ideally also with AI methods, very good knowledge of rock and geoscientific fieldwork and drones. Extensive knowledge in the field of geohazards. Experience in environmental geotechnics is desirable.

Ideally also experience in transfer to practice, e.g. through activities in professional societies or transfer activities with society.

Experience in the organisation of a chair/department, ideally experience in project management and/or leadership experience or specific qualifications in this area.

Very good communication skills. Ideally also experience in science communication or knowledge and technology transfer.
