The AG Weinelt studies femtomagnetism initiated by ultrashort optical laser pulses. We
unravel processes like ultrafast demagnetization and magnetic switching by following
electronic scattering, spin transport, magnon excitation and surface dynamics with
complemental experimental methods. We have a strong background and reputation in state-
selective and spin-sensitive time- and angle-resolved photoemission techniques supported
by the DFG. Beyond our laboratory-based research, we lead 3 BMBF projects establishing a
new experimental infrastructure around the FemtoSlicing facility of the Synchrotron Source
BESSY II (Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin). With the new state-of-the-art experimental end station
for time-resolved X-ray-scattering and absorption we study state- and element specific
magnetization dynamics in 3d transition and 4f rare earth metals as well as in their
compounds.

Tasks

Your area of responsibility involves a project about ultrafast electronic excitations and their
role for magnetization dynamics funded as FU Berlin core support for the Collaborative
Research Center (CRC) on Ultrafast Spin Dynamics. Within close cooperation with other
members of the AG Weinelt and Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin you will help to explore the
microscopic processes behind electron, lattice, and spin interactions in 3d and 4f metals.
During this, you will perform X-ray studies at large scale facilities, like BESSY II, FLASH or
EuXFEL. Within the project period the new high-energy-resolution beamline next to the
existing Slicing branch at BESSY II goes into operation. Here, femtosecond resolved X-ray
absorption experiments will be feasible, allowing for simultaneous detection of magnetic and
electronic structure dynamics. You are willing to work in a team of PhD students/postdocs
from FU Berlin and Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin as well as in collaboration with our collegues
from DESY Hamburg to assume and accept responsibility. For further qualification you’ll be
given the opportunity to undertake doctoral research and are expected to participate in the
Graduate School of the CRC Ultrafast Spin Dynamics. This position also includes
collaboration in teaching.

Requirements

Requirements:

Completed university studies with a Master degree preferentially in physics.

Desirable:

Master or diploma work in experimental physics; experience with ultrafast spectroscopy at
large scale facilities, experience in X-ray absorption spectroscopy; experience with ultra-
high-vacuum and liquid gas cooled experiments; experience with magnetization dynamics;
experience in molecular beam epitaxy and sputter deposition.
