Tasks

We are seeking a motivated Doctoral Student to contribute to a study on the role of phytoplankton in the global methane budget.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Research and teaching (4 SWS) in the fields of environmental microbiomics, general biology, and ecology
  • Conducting laboratory experiments to measure methane emissions by phytoplankton under various environmental conditions and investigating the biochemical mechanisms involved
  • Determining the isotopic signature of methane produced by phytoplankton and comparing it with field data collected from marine and freshwater systems
  • Collaborating with remote sensing speciallsts to integrate your laboratory and field measurements into global models
  • Contributing to the preparation of teaching material for courses in the department

Requirements

  • Successfully completed scientific university degree (Master's, Diploma or equivalent) in the fields of geobiology, biogeochemistry or similar
  • The ability to teach in German and/or English is required; willingness to acquire the missing language skills in each case
  • Experience in gas analysis using Gas Chromatography (GC) and Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS)
  • Experience in isotope measurements of CH4, CO2 and organic matter
  • Experience in culturing algae and cyanobacteria
  • Fieldwork experience, ideally in both marine and freshwater (limnic) environments
  • Foundational understanding of cyanobacterial physiology
  • Knowledge of R and GIS

Desirable:

  • Strong interest in learning modelling techniques, especially those incorporating remote sensing data
  • effective teamwork skills
  • Enthusiasm for mentoring and supervising BSc and MSc students in practical work
  • Independence, high self-motivation, excellent social comptetence
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Experience in scientific writing and publishing research results
