The suc­cess­ful applic­ant will cover research and teach­ing in the field named above.

Along with the reg­u­lar offi­cial duties of pro­fess­ors lis­ted in Art­icle 99 of the Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the fol­low­ing activ­it­ies:

The scope of the pro­fess­or­ship will include work­ing closely with the Dah­lem School of Edu­ca­tion (DSE) as well as other depart­ments and divi­sions that offer teacher train­ing pro­grams at Freie Uni­versität Ber­lin. The new pro­fessor will also be expec­ted to con­trib­ute to the devel­op­ment and estab­lish­ment of research asso­ci­ations. They will also work with the “Q-Mas­ter/k2teach” pro­grams that train “career-changers” enter­ing the pro­fes­sional field of edu­ca­tion from another field. The appointee should be pre­pared to col­lab­or­ate with other mem­bers of the insti­tute out­side the field of didactics. They will also be expec­ted to address gender and diversity issues as part of their research and teach­ing.


Appoint­ment require­ments are gov­erned by Art­icle 100 of the Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act (Ber­liner Hoch­schul­ge­setz).

Applic­ants should hold a uni­versity degree in Eng­lish in a pro­gram includ­ing com­pon­ents in didactics. They should also have at least three years of teach­ing exper­i­ence in primary or sec­ond­ary edu­ca­tion and/or a doc­toral degree in or with a focus on Eng­lish didactics with addi­tional research exper­i­ence in the field of Eng­lish didactics con­duc­ted in school or in cooper­a­tion with schools. The can­did­ate should also have an excel­lent record of – prefer­ably inter­na­tional – research activ­it­ies in the field of evid­enced-based for­eign lan­guage didactics. They should have aca­demic teach­ing exper­i­ence in Eng­lish didactics – if pos­sible in an inter­na­tional con­text – and be com­fort­able teach­ing in both Eng­lish and Ger­man. They should also have exper­i­ence with pro­jects fin­anced through third-party fund­ing.

Applic­a­tions should include a CV, cop­ies of all cer­ti­fic­ates of aca­demic qual­i­fic­a­tion, if applic­able the let­ter of appoint­ment (all doc­u­ments in Ger­man or Eng­lish; please add trans­la­tions if needed), a list of pub­lic­a­tions, inform­a­tion on teach­ing exper­i­ence in schools, a list of courses pre­vi­ously taught at uni­versit­ies, and evid­ence of teach­ing com­pet­ence. Fur­ther­more, please include inform­a­tion on involve­ment in ongo­ing and future research endeav­ours, joint research pro­jects and extern­ally fun­ded pro­jects, and if neces­sary lan­guage cer­ti­fic­ates.
