Technische Universität Berlin, Faculty III - Process Sciences - Institute of Food Technology and Food Chemistry and the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) invite applications for the position of a
University Professor - salary grade W2
in the field of "Food Contact Materials".
The W2 professorship at TU Berlin is to be filled in a joint appointment procedure within the framework of the “Berliner Model” and includes the dual position as head of the unit “Safety of Food-Contact Materials” at BfR. The initial employment contract is limited to 5 years with the option for further continuation.
Research in the field of food contact materials and food safety shall investigate possibilities for identifying process-induced toxicologically relevant chemical compounds and search for ways of minimizing or replacing them during production. The following subjects are of particular interest in terms of the interdependence of food and contact materials:
Migration (of toxic substances) from food contact materials
Investigations regarding the nano-furnishing of food contact materials and the release of nanomaterials
Investigation on optimized food contact material properties with regard to inertness and toxicological safety
Process-induced modifications of food contact materials and their influence on the way that substances and particles are released
Modelling of migratory processes
The BfR unit “Safety of Food-Contact Materials” deals with the health assessment of food contact materials. The business management of the BfR “Kommission für Bedarfsgegenstände” (Committee for Consumer Products) is based at the BfR unit. At BfR, the posted position includes the following roles and responsibilities:
Chairing the unit “Safety of Food-Contact Materials” at the Department for Chemicals and Product Safety
Furthering scientific development in the area of chemicals and product safety and maintaining the set of BfR recommendations on food-contact materials
Responsibility for BfR commission meetings and associated committee meetings
Providing scientific advice to the German Federal Government and federal authorities as well as supporting the federal states towards implementing the Food, Commodities and Feed Code (LFGB)
Participating in national and international research projects
Representing the BfR on national and international committees
At TU Berlin, the position involves teaching responsibilities of 2 hours per semester (2 SWS) and requires sufficient language proficiency to teach classes in German and English. The professor shall also offer topics and act as supervisor of Bachelor, Master and Doctoral theses.
Candidates must fulfill the appointment requirements for professorships in accordance with §100 BerlHG (Berlin Higher Education Act) [information sheet available by request]. This includes a completed course of academic studies in a relevant field, qualified achievements in research (PhD), post-doctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) or additional scientific achievements, (documented by relevant publications in journals with appraisal procedures) and pedagogical didactic qualifications (proven by a teaching portfolio. Other factors taken into account are an ability to lead a large R&D working group in the field of food-contact materials and proven competence in obtaining and coordinating third party funding.
The BfR position as group leader requires proof of international cooperation in the field of research with relevant publications. Leadership and teamwork skills, a family-friendly management style, resilience and a willingness to travel complete the profile. Experience in the following areas is also welcome: working with interdisciplinary teams, promoting the careers of young scholars, and gender mainstreaming.
