University Professor of East European and East-Central European History

The successful applicant will cover the breadth of the field in both research and teaching with a focus on modern East European history and with attention to approaches including political history, social history, and cultural history.
Appointment requirements are governed by Article 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz).
Candidates are expected to have at least one area of specialization in Russian/Soviet history; in addition to another area related to the study of history and backed by scholarly publications. We are especially interested in candidates who have worked on imperial relations and transregional interconnections. Applicants should be proficient in Russian, and preferably in an additional language from the region. Excellent research results as well as publications in international and peer-reviewed publications are a requirement. Furthermore, candidates should have extensive teaching experience at the university level, preferably including international teaching experience, and should be able to teach in German and English. The appointee should be able to demonstrate experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects, as well.
Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Article 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:
The new professor will be expected to contribute to collaborative research endeavors with Freie Universität’s partners. He or she should also contribute to the graduate programs offered at the Institute for East European Studies and at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute. In addition, the appointee will teach in the existing bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and contribute to developing them further (including course offerings in English). He or she should also contribute to the development of interdisciplinary research, including international cooperation. Public outreach, including contact with media outlets, is also expected. The appointee should also be willing to conduct his/her teaching in a way that is attentive and sensitive to diversity issues.
