Full Professorship for ‘Science Studies with focus on evaluation research’ (W2)

Working field:

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Department of Library and Information Science, invites applications for a Full Professorship for ‘Science Studies with focus on evaluation research’ (W2) from as soon as possible and limited for 5 years. This is a W3 tenure track position. In order to verify whether the individual performance meets the requirements of a permanent employment, an evaluation process will be opened not later than four years of service. The professorship will be funded by the „Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses“.The aim of the programme is to pave the way for a secure career in academia for early stage researchers. Tenure track professors at the HU Berlin are expected to carry out research and teach, as well as be active on various university committees and acquire leadership and management skills. The concrete requirements out of the framework catalogue [] will be specified in the course of the appointment process.

Science Studies is viewed from a broad perspective for this professorship. Both theoretical work such as on empirical research methods as well as interdisciplinary trends in the research area shall be considered. Qualified applicants demonstrate innovative research particularly in Science Studies, Library and Information Science or related disciplines.
Focused research areas should be one or more of the following:
  • Methods and development of indicators (e.g. scientometric, bibliometrics, Altmetrics, data mining)
  • Open science / citizen science
  • Research support and funding
  • Monitoring systems / assessment / peer review
  • Young researchers / scholars
  • Research quality (research integrity / misconduct / quality standards)
  • Innovation research
  • Translation / knowledge transfer
  • Research information systems
  • Socialization of research, science and scholarship

The professor will teach in the Master program Wissenschaftsforschung (currently based at the Department of Social Sciences of HU Berlin) and in the study programs of the Berlin School of Library and Information Science. Engaging with the newly founded interdisciplinary Centre for Science Studies (Robert-K.-Merton-Zentrum) is expected. The future job holder will also actively participate in research and service projects developed for research organizations within the wider Berlin area and will particularly cooperate with the Berlin-based research area „Research Systems and Science Dynamics“ of the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW).
The professorship will complement the existing research and teaching areas at the Berlin School of Library and Information Science. Memory institutions (above all libraries) and public information infrastructures constitute a major research and teaching area at the Berlin School of Library and Information Science, as they are responsible for the organization, management and preservation of information flows in a society.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses in German and English and to develop new classes. He/she will conduct research at the highest international level independently, and is expected to be able to take part in all the activities of the School, including examinations and administration and application for third party funded projects. Successful candidates should have research experience in one of the stated research areas or other related important and innovative areas of research. The qualifications for this position are: evidence of teaching excellence, high level communication skills, a strong commitment to the school's establishment at the university and the international research community.

The applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in conjunction with § 102c combined with § 100 of the ‘Berliner Hochschulgesetz’. Very good English language proficiency is required, German language proficiency is requested, but can be acquired at the start of the employment. We are looking for an early-stage-researcher who acquired her or his PhD degree not more than six years ago (exceptions due for instance to child care are permissible).
HU is seeking to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching, and specifically encourages qualified female scholars to apply. Researchers from abroad are welcome to apply. Severely disabled applicants with equivalent qualifications will be given preferential consideration. People with an immigration background are specifically encouraged to apply.
