Work­ing field:

The Data­base Sys­tems and Inform­a­tion Man­age­ment (DIMA) Group at TU Ber­lin is cur­rently seek­ing to hire a Research Asso­ci­ate (PhD Stu­dent) to con­duct research and devel­op­ment in the area of scal­able data infra­struc­tures. Cur­rently, we are design­ing an open asset-cent­ric eco­sys­tem based on a recently pub­lished vis­ion paper, avail­able here: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1909.03026.pdf.

The eco­sys­tem would enable the pub­lic to pub­lish, access, and com­bine all types of data-related assets, includ­ing diverse data sources (e.g., sensor data streams), algorithms (e.g., for machine learn­ing), sys­tems (e.g., that are stream­ing-based), and pipelines (e.g., com­bin­ing data clean­ing, fea­ture extrac­tion, and clas­si­fic­a­tion, to trans­form raw data into labeled events), among oth­ers. The ini­tial task will be to design and build the oper­a­tions man­ager (OM), which is at the core of the data eco­sys­tem and based on the above­men­tioned vis­ion paper. Sev­eral research chal­lenges to be addressed, include auto­mat­ing optim­iz­a­tion, determ­in­ing exe­cu­tion envir­on­ments, track­ing the usage of assets, and enabling scal­able exe­cu­tion under elasti­city, pri­vacy, and secur­ity con­straints. We encour­age applic­a­tions from highly motiv­ated can­did­ates who wish to con­trib­ute to the devel­op­ment of a novel data pro­cessing sys­tem for scal­able data infra­struc­tures.

Require­ments:

Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter, Dip­lom or equi­val­ent) in com­puter sci­ence with a focus on data man­age­ment, dis­trib­uted sys­tems, or scal­able data ana­lysis. You should be inter­ested in work­ing in a lead­ing research field, devel­op­ing a novel sys­tem, and con­duct­ing research in real-world applic­a­tion set­tings. Know­ledge on one or more of the fol­low­ing areas is highly desired: scal­able and reli­able sys­tems oper­a­tion, data pro­cessing, dis­trib­uted sys­tems, and par­al­lel com­put­ing. Can­did­ates must have strong pro­gram­ming skills (prefer­ably, Java or C++) and good com­mu­nic­a­tion skills in Eng­lish.
