Pro­fess­or­ship in Eng­lish Philo­logy / Lin­guist­ics with the focus Soci­o­lin­guist­ics

Work­ing field:

The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate applic­ant will cover the area named above in research and teach­ing. The pro­fess­or­ship will com­ple­ment lin­guist­ics at the Insti­tute for Eng­lish Lan­guage and Lit­er­at­ure and has a spe­cial soci­o­lin­guistic focus which con­trib­utes both to the study pro­grammes of the Insti­tute for Eng­lish Lan­guage and Lit­er­at­ure and to the bach­elor’s pro­gramme Lan­guage and Soci­ety.

Apart from the offi­cial duties in accord­ance with Art­icle 99 of the Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the fol­low­ing activ­it­ies:

We expect the new pro­fessor to cover the above-men­tioned teach­ing and research focus and to con­trib­ute to the gen­eral teach­ing of both the Eng­lish and the lin­guist­ics study pro­grams at the depart­ment, includ­ing teacher train­ing.

Require­ments:

Appoint­ment require­ments are gov­erned by Art­icle 100 of the Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act (Ber­liner Hoch­schul­ge­setz).

Suc­cess­ful can­did­ates will have exper­i­ence with qual­it­at­ive and quant­it­at­ive meth­ods of soci­o­lin­guist­ics. They should also have expert­ise in at least one of the fol­low­ing areas:

  • dis­course ana­lysis / con­ver­sa­tion ana­lysis / inter­ac­tional soci­o­lin­guist­ics
  • mul­ti­lin­gual­ism
  • lan­guage ideo­logy
  • lan­guage and diversity
  • lan­guage and gender
  • lan­guage and glob­al­iz­a­tion.

We are look­ing for someone with inter­na­tional teach­ing exper­i­ence and an excel­lent track record of research activ­it­ies as well as with exper­i­ence in acquir­ing and con­duct­ing extern­ally fun­ded research pro­jects.

How to ap­ply:

Applic­a­tions should include a CV, cop­ies of all cer­ti­fic­ates of aca­demic qual­i­fic­a­tion in Ger­man or Eng­lish; if applic­able the let­ter of appoint­ment (please add trans­la­tions if needed), a list of pub­lic­a­tions, a list of courses pre­vi­ously taught, and evid­ence of teach­ing com­pet­ence. Fur­ther­more, please include inform­a­tion on involve­ment in ongo­ing and future research endeav­ours, joint research pro­jects and extern­ally fun­ded pro­jects, and if neces­sary lan­guage cer­ti­fic­ates. If applic­able for the respect­ive con­tent area, please give inform­a­tion on indus­trial cooper­a­tion, inven­tions/pat­ents and spin-offs.
