Research Assistant - 0.83 working-time - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen - 1st qualification period (PhD candidate)

Work­ing field:

  • Collaborate with and support the research area’s professor in research and teaching;
  • teaching independently and supporting the research area’s professor in developing and implementing courses in the areas of methods of social research and social inequality;
  • doing research independently in the field of methods of social research (qualitative and quantitative methods, process-oriented methodology, statistics) as well as in one of the research area’s substantive research field’s;
  • publishing research results in scientific publications and at conferences;
  • collaborating in the research area’s administrative tasks, especially related to teaching and organizing/planning examinations;
  • willingness to write a “Dissertation” (Ph.D. thesis) on a topic in one of the research area’s research field’s.

Require­ments:

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in sociology;
  • good knowledge in social science methodology, documented by courses completed during studies, respective teaching experience or publications (e.g., on process-oriented methodology, post-colonial methodology, Non-European epistemology);
  • good knowledge in qualitative methods, documented by courses completed during studies, respective teaching experience or publications;
  • good knowledge in quantitative methods, documented by courses completed during studies, respective teaching experience or publications;
  • interest in the research area’s research fields, especially in the Collaborative Research Center “Re-Figuration of Spaces” (SFB 1265) and the “Global Center of Spatial Methods for Urban Sustainability” (GCSMUS);
  • organizational and co-ordination skills;
  • initiative, excellent communication skills; experience and willingness to work in a team;
  • profound knowledge of English (fluent in written and oral skills);
  • willingness to learn German.

Desired additional requirements:
  • experience in teaching methods of social research, especially in teaching introductory courses (mandatory courses, 1st/2nd semester Bachelor);
  • experience in organizing and planning teaching (e.g., planning courses, organizing and planning exams);
  • experience in scientific publishing in English;
  • good knowledge in social theory, documented by courses completed during studies, respective teaching experience or publications;
  • good knowledge of social inequality research (e.g., “migration”, “class,” “gender”, “age” or “intersectionality”), documented by courses completed during studies, respective teaching experience or publications;
  • good knowledge in sociology of work, organizations, labor or economic sociology, documented by courses completed during studies, respective teaching experience or publications;
  • good knowledge in urban, regional, spatial or development sociology, documented by courses completed during studies or respective teaching experience or publications;
  • good knowledge in sociology of health and medicine, documented by courses completed during studies, respective teaching experience or publications;
  • experience in international collaboration and ability to organize cross-cultural exchanges for students.
