Research Assistant (PostDoc) - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

part-time employment may be possible

Technische Universität Berlin has a vacancy for a postdoc position in the project Ethics of Intelligence. Conducted within the Science of Intelligence Cluster of Excellence, the project explores ethical issues that arise in the context of intelligence research. What principles of intelligence are common to all forms of intelligence, whether artificial or biological, or robot, computer program, human or animal? How can we apply these principles to create intelligent technologies? Finding answers to these questions, using an ethically responsible approach, is the central aim of the Science of Intelligence cluster (https://www.scioi.de). The project involves researchers from a number of analytical and synthetic disciplines, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, control, robotics, computer vision, behavioral biology, psychology, educational science, neuroscience, and philosophy, working together in a multidisciplinary research program with the participation of several universities and research institutes in Berlin. The cluster has defined interdisciplinary research projects (https://www.scienceofintelligence.de/research/projects) combining analytical and synthetic research and addressing central aspects of individual, social, and collective intelligence.

Working field:

The project focuses on the ethical implications of the (future) research results of the Science of Intelligence Custer of Excellence. Through close cooperation, researchers in the cluster aim to investigate questions related to robotics, artificial intelligence, and intelligence research. The project implements methods of conceptual analysis, philosophical discourse analysis, expert interviews, focus groups, and vision assessment. The postholder will assist discourse on ethical questions within the cluster as well as prepare research results for presentations, project reports, and publications. Participation in research colloquia, lecture series, and workshops, as well as active participation in the cluster's research activities is expected.

Requirements:

The call is aimed at postdoc researchers with a PhD in philosophy, sociology, or a related discipline as well as demonstrated knowledge and experience in the following areas: applied ethics and technology ethics, philosophy and sociology of science and technology, and methods of philosophical conceptual analysis. Excellent written and spoken English are also a requirement.

Desired competences: knowledge in the area of critical theory or political philosophy; knowledge of the methods of technological impact assessment, experience of conducting expert interviews and focus group discussions, research experience in the area of robotics and artificial intelligence; a background in engineering or natural science; German language skills.
