University Professor - salary grade W3
for the field of "Mathematics – Numerical methods for partial differential equations".
The position requires research and teaching in the area of numerical methods for partial differential equations. Areas of research expertise of applicants should include but are not limited to:
Mathematical analysis of modern methods for the numerical approximation of complex problems in PDEs
Developing efficient and robust methods for solving PDEs
Applications of PDEs in the natural and engineering sciences.
Teaching will be required in all mathematical degree programs (including undergraduate) and in the service teaching of mathematics for other programs. Teaching requirements must be met in German and English. Candidates are expected to supervise students’ theses on bachelor, master and PhD level as well as to participate in the academic administration of the university.
Candidates must have earned a doctorate in mathematics, satisfy the requirements for a professorship according to § 100 BerlHG (have outstanding academic credentials, an exceptional record of groundbreaking research in the area of numerical methods for partial differential equations, i.e. publications in refereed journals, demonstrated leadership in their professional communities, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and all academic duties associated with our bachelor, master and doctoral programs.
The area of research expertise should allow co-operations with the current professors at the Institute of Mathematics as well as participation in current and future collaborative research activities. An active participation in the ongoing collaborative research centers, i.e. the Cluster of Excellence MATH+ and the Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) is expected as is experience in applying for research grants and collaborative research activities.
Applicants must show teaching experience at university level in the field of mathematics and in particular in the area of numerical methods for partial differential equations. Additional experience in advising and supervising bachelor, master and doctoral students is expected. Experience in teaching mathematics to non-mathematics students and in leading large research groups is desired.
