Technische Universität Berlin - Faculty IV - Institute of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science / Cluster of Excellence: Science of Intelligence

Research Assistance (PhD candidate or PostDoc) - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

part-time employment may be possible

The Technische Universität Berlin invites applications for a position (Postdoc or PhD candidate) for the Cluster of Excellence “Science of Intelligence”.
What are the principles of intelligence, shared by all forms of intelligence, no matter whether artificial or biological,
whether robot, computer program, human, or animal? And how can we apply these principles to create intelligent technology? Answering these questions - in an ethically responsible way - is the central scientific objective of the new Cluster of Excellence Science of Intelligence (https://www.scioi.de), where researchers from a large number of analytic and synthetic disciplines - artificial intelligence, machine learning, control, robotics, computer vision, behavioral biology, psychology, educational science, neuroscience, and philosophy - join forces to create a multi-disciplinary research program across universities and research institutes in Berlin. Interdisciplinary research projects have been defined (https://www.scienceofintelligence.de/research/researchprojects), which combine analytic and synthetic research and which address key aspects of individual, social, and collective intelligence.

Working field:

Working field: Ethical and Trustworthy Artificial and Machine Intelligence (etami)
Artificial intelligence can be useful for a wide range of areas such as health care, energy consumption, transport, farming, climate change and risk management. For example, Intelligent Transport systems can reduce traffic jams, AI systems can raise the independency of visually impaired people, or optimise the efficiency of engines. Thus, also the efforts to decarbonise, in favour of a greener society, can be strengthened.
However, the application of artificial-intelligence methods also creates new challenges for future work organisation and raises legal and ethical issues. In order to constitute the confidence necessary for the acceptance and use of AI in society, standards, techniques and systems must be developed that follow fundamental rights and ethical rules. The etami project focuses on the ethical implications of (future) outcomes of research of the cluster of excellence “Science of Intelligence” and aims to connect to the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence by the High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI HLEG) of the EU Commission.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and execution of research projects at the intersection of ethics, sociology, and intelligence research
  • Interaction within the SCIoI cluster of excellence and the etami project partners
  • Compilation of the results for presentations, project reports, and publications

This position requires participation in research colloquia, lecture series and workshops, as well as an active engagement in the Cluster's research activities.

Requirements:

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in a suitable discipline
Applicants should have proven skills/background in following topics:
  • Ethics and/or policy in the context of emerging technologies
  • Philosophy/Sociology of technology
  • Methods of philosophical conceptual analysis
  • Experience with methods of technology assessment such as vision assessment, foresight analysis, scenario techniques etc.
  • Experience in conducting expert interviews and/or focus group discussions
  • University studies in sociology, philosophy, legal studies or related fields in the humanities
  • Additional research experience in the field of Robotics and AI is an advantage
  • Additional background in an engineering science or a natural science is an advantage

The research data require English language proficiency; German language proficiency is an advantage.
