The Insti­tute for Art His­tory and His­tor­ical Urban Stud­ies at Tech­nis­che Uni­versität Ber­lin has a prac­tical and object-focused ori­ent­a­tion which clearly defines the Bach­elor pro­gramme “Cul­ture and Tech­no­logy – Core Sub­ject Art His­tory” as well as the research-ori­ented Mas­ter pro­gramme “Art His­tory” with the majors “Art Tech­no­logy” and “Museum” (in cooper­a­tion with the Ber­lin State Museums). The aca­demic focus of the depart­ment of Mod­ern Art His­tory is on ques­tions of art his­tory as cul­tural his­tory, as on the aes­thetic, social, polit­ical, and insti­tu­tional con­stel­la­tions which have shaped the pro­duc­tion, cir­cu­la­tion and con­sump­tion of art since the 19th cen­tury.

Work­ing field:

  • Research and teach­ing involve­ment, in par­tic­u­lar with regard to Mod­ern Art His­tory, with a focus on con­tem­por­ary art
  • Pre­par­a­tion of a doc­toral thesis
  • Teach­ing classes for the inter­dis­cip­lin­ary Bach­elor pro­gramme “Cul­ture and Tech­no­logy”, as well as for the research-ori­ented Mas­ter pro­gramme “Art His­tory / Art tech­no­logy” respect­ively “Art His­tory /Museum”
  • Pro­act­ive par­ti­cip­a­tion in shap­ing the insti­tute’s pro­file, inde­pend­ent con­cep­tion of own (pro­ject) sem­inars and schol­arly events
  • Admin­is­trat­ive and organ­isa­tional tasks for the insti­tute

Require­ments:

  • Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Dip­lom, Mas­ter or equi­val­ent) in art his­tory
  • Excel­lent know­ledge of art his­tory from the mid-20th cen­tury onwards
  • Dis­ser­ta­tion sub­ject in rela­tion to the vacancy pro­file
  • Research interests with a clear cor­rel­a­tion to the insti­tute’s focus (art his­tor­ical trans­fer and net­work research, post­co­lo­nial stud­ies, art as a polit­ical cat­egory, insti­tu­tional his­tory)
  • Excel­lent Ger­man and Eng­lish lan­guage know­ledge, good know­ledge of French also desir­able
  • Teach­ing exper­i­ence in art his­tory is advant­age­ous
  • Can­did­ates will also be expec­ted to share know­ledge and interests with the dif­fer­ent research pro­jects based at the Insti­tute, and should be team play­ers
