Work­ing field:

The aim of the pro­ject „Func­tions and Con­sequences of Unem­ploy­ment in Research­ers' Careers“ is to explore the – field spe­cific – impact of unem­ploy­ment in research­ers’ careers on research prac­tices, the ways in which research activ­it­ies are con­tin­ued dur­ing unem­ploy­ment, and on the con­tinu­ation of careers. We will identify the con­di­tions under which a suc­cess­ful con­tinu­ation of an aca­demic career is pos­sible des­pite unem­ploy­ment, and the mech­an­isms that link unem­ploy­ment and the sub­sequent research career.
Tasks include par­ti­cip­a­tion in the con­cep­tual pre­par­a­tion, con­duct and ana­lysis of the planned empir­ical stud­ies (qual­it­at­ive inter­views, qual­it­at­ive con­tent ana­lysis) in Ger­many. It is pos­sible to develop a dis­ser­ta­tion topic on the basis of the data col­lec­ted in the empir­ical stud­ies. Fur­ther inform­a­tion on the pro­ject can be obtained from Jochen Gläser (


  • Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter, Dip­loma or equi­val­ent) in a social sci­ences dis­cip­line with a focus on one of the areas: Soci­ology of Sci­ence, Pro­fes­sions, Organ­isa­tions or Work as well as the will­ing­ness to famil­i­ar­ise with the other areas
  • Excel­lent Ger­man and Eng­lish lan­guage skills
  • High degree of inde­pend­ence and com­mit­ment in the organ­isa­tion and real­isa­tion of pre­dom­in­antly qual­it­at­ive empir­ical stud­ies
  • Know­ledge in stat­ist­ical ana­lysis is desir­able
