Work­ing field:

Cogen­er­a­tion of heat and power plays an essen­tial role for the reduc­tion of CO2 emis­sions. In the field of private homes, the com­bin­a­tion of a Stirl­ing engine to gen­er­ate elec­trical power and a pel­let fur­nace to gen­er­ate heat is an appro­pri­ate solu­tion. With the use of spa­tially resolved Com­pu­ta­tional Fluid Dynam­ics (CFD) dif­fer­ent con­cepts to enhance the heat trans­fer between the exhaust gas and the heat exchanger of the Stirl­ing engine will be invest­ig­ated. This will lead to an increase in effi­ciency for the over­all pro­cess. Other aspects like an effi­cient sep­ar­a­tion of ash particles from the exhaust gas will also be numer­ic­ally invest­ig­ated. The numer­ical res­ults will be com­pared and val­id­ated with exper­i­mental data from an indus­trial part­ner. In col­lab­or­a­tion with them a concept will be developed that shows major eco­lo­gical and eco­nom­ical enhance­ments in com­par­ison to the exist­ing pro­to­type. PhD thesis pre­par­a­tion is pos­sible.

Require­ments:

Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter, Dip­lom or equi­val­ent) in pro­cess engin­eer­ing or a closely related engin­eer­ing field with a focus on fluid dynam­ics with a very good degree. Eng­lish lan­guage skills are required due to the inter­na­tional work­ing group. Pref­er­ence will be given to applic­ants with exper­i­ence in numer­ical mod­el­ing of fluid dynam­ics and heat trans­fer phe­nom­ena. Exper­i­ence using Sim­cen­ter STAR-CCM+ and Java is desired, but not expec­ted.
