Working field:

Eutrophication, including cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs), is an important societal problem, whose effective management relies on understanding of phytoplankton biology and ecology. This position is part of the DFG-funded project "Cost/benefit of dinitrogen fixation and the ecosystem consequences" , which aims to understand and quantify the costs (e.g. forming heterocysts) and benefits (N availability) of nitrogen fixation, and the consequences for ecological fitness and ecosystems.
This is a collaborative project with the group of Dr. Jan Köhler (IGB Berlin), which includes lab and field experiments, the analysis of long-term data and mathematical modelling. This advertised PhD or post-doc position focuses on modeling and includes updating and applying an existing agent-based model (ABM) of Anabaena (https://doi.org/10.1111/1462-2920.13299). The model will be updated to the current state of understanding (i.e. since its development in 2016), applied to the lab and field experiments conducted as part of this project, and to Lake Müggelsee. The goal is to reproduce and understand the dynamics of nitrogen-fixing and non-nitrogen-fixing species in this system during its history of changing N-availability, which will contribute to science-based predictions of cyanobacteria blooms and thresholds of nitrogen loading.

Our research group works in the area of surface water quality with a focus on microbial ecology; works at the interface/combination of biology and mechanistic modeling; is a diverse team see website "About us", consisting of German (6) and international (1), male (4) and female (3), and PI (1), post-doc (2) and PhD (4) researchers. We are part of a dynamic research environment with collaborations in Berlin and worldwide. We meet weekly as a group and individually. Working options are flexible, i.e. in the office or partly home office. The presentation of research results at national and international conferences is supported. Requirements:

The successful candidate holds a university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) and/or doctorate in Environmental Sciences or Engineering with a focus on water quality or a related field. Good knowledge of German and/or English is required and the willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills.

Desired experience, skills and interests include the development and application of mathematical models and/or quantitative data analysis (e.g. programming skills, numerical methods). We seek a person that is enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary collaborative team of experimentalists and modelers, and the contribution of models to understanding of phytoplankton biology and ecology.
