Working field:

We are looking for a PhD student in the field of urban climatology or regional climatology with urban-rural context. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research projects of the chair of climatology at national and international level on current topics of urban and regional climatology, as well as play an active role in teaching and supervising students. Further tasks:

  • Development and analysis of research questions related to atmospheric processes and land surface-atmosphere interactions using observational data from the Urban Climate Observatory (UCO) Berlin und model-based datasets such as the atmospheric dataset Central Europe refined analysis version 2 (CER v2) as well as own simulations with LES model PALM-4U
  • Climatological , urban climatological, urban ecology and planning-related courses (especially study projects) amounting to 4 SWS in the Bachelor´s and Master´s degree "Ecology and Environmental Planning" and "Urban Ecosystem Sciences"
  • Supervision of Bachelor´s and Master´s theses in the above-mentioned study programs

Requirements:

We are looking for candidates (d/m/f) who are highly motivated to pursue challenging scientific ideas and solve interdisciplinary problems. The following qualifications are expected:

  • Successfully completed scientific university studies (Master, diploma or equivalent) in the field of environmental/natural sciences; a very good degree is desirable
  • Specific expertise in climatology, urban climate and environmental meteorology with relevance to experimental atmospheric studies
  • Knowledge in descriptive and explorative statistics for the evaluation of atmospheric measurements and model simulations
  • Knowledge and experience in programming software solutions for the acquisition, processing, analysis and visualisation of atmospheric data (e.g. Python, R or IDL)
  • The ability to teach in German and/or in English is required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills

The following knowledge is desirable:

  • Experience in the application of sensor-specific measurement techniques for the acquisition of atmospheric quantities, especially with eddy-covariance systems and ground-based remote sensing (wind LiDAR, Ceilometer, radiometer, RADAR)
  • Experience in the application of atmospheric models (WRF, PALM-4U)
  • Knowledge of scientific data standards (CF standards) and file formats (NetCDF)
  • Experience with the Linux operating system and the command line
  • Experience in writing scientific publications

In general, the ability to work in a structured and independent manner, determination, organisational an coordination skills, reliability, team spirit and excellent communication skills are expected.
