Technische Universität Berlin - Faculty II – Mathematics and Natural Sciences - Institute of Chemistry

University Professorship - BesGr. W3

in the field of "Physical Chemistry / Biophysical Chemistry".
The professorship will be part of the Cluster of Excellence "Unifying Systems in Catalysis (UniSysCat)".

Working field:

The position requires research and teaching in the area of Physical Chemistry at the Institute of Chemistry. Teaching will be required in the study programs of Chemistry (BSc/MSc) and Biological Chemistry (MSc) and in the service teaching of chemistry for other programs. Candidates should be able to teach in German and English. Furthermore, candidates are expected to supervise students’ theses on Bachelor, Master and PhD levels as well as to participate in the academic administration of the university.

The research focus of successful candidates should address the field of production, characterization and targeted modification of molecular processes in biological/chemical, (bio-)catalytic or switchable systems by application of state-of-the-art physical methods on multiple time scales. Candidates are expected to connect with researchers in the area of the mathematical modeling of the systems under study. The area of research expertise should allow co-operations in the molecular life sciences or other key research subjects of the Institute of Chemistry at Technische Universität Berlin as well as participation in current and future collaborative research activities. Experience in raising funds from national and international external sources and in collaborative research projects is expected.

Of particular interest are collaborations within the Cluster of Excellence “Unifying Systems in Catalysis (UniSysCat)”. The candidate is expected to contribute to the modeling, the characterization and the understanding of coupled catalytic systems.

Requirements:

Successful applicants must fulfill the requirements for appointment at the professor level in compliance with § 100 BerlHG (Berlin Higher Education Act). These include a completed academic education in chemistry, physics or a comparable discipline, qualified achievements in research (doctorate and additional academic achievements) and pedagogical-didactic qualifications, demonstrated by teaching experience and visualized in a teaching portfolio (for further information see TUB Website, https://www.tu.berlin/go209650/ ).

We are looking for candidates with an internationally visible profile in the area of (bio-)physical chemistry, who will represent this area in research and teaching. The research focus of the candidate is expected to be in the area of spectroscopic characterization of biological or chemical molecular systems. Interest in innovative methodical combination of state-of-the-art spectroscopic and analytical techniques enabling strong interdisciplinary research to build bridges between experiment and theory is desirable; focusing only in the field of ultrafast spectroscopy or NMR-spectroscopy will be insufficient. Cutting-edge research results with sustained leadership published in internationally visible peer-reviewed journals and experience in raising funds from national and international external sources (proven by successful grant applications of the last 5 years) are expected.

Applicants must show teaching experiences at university level. Additional experience in advising and supervising Bachelor, Master and doctoral students is expected as well as experience in academic administration and in leading larger research groups.

As an internationally distinguished university, we require good knowledge of English and welcome applications from non-German-speaking academics who are willing to learn the German language as soon as possible.
