Working field:

The Future Availability of Secondary Raw Materials (FutuRaM) is a project with 28 industrial and academic partners across Europe. FutuRaM seeks to (1) develop knowledge on the availability and recoverability of secondary raw materials (SRMs) within the European Union (EU), with a special focus on critical raw materials (CRMs), to enable fact-based decision making for their exploitation in the EU and third countries, and (2) disseminate this information via a systematic and transparent Secondary Raw Materials Knowledge Base (SRM-KB). Your specific tasks in the project are
  • Quantification and characterization of anthropogenic stocks and resources and the resulting flows of wastes and secondary raw materials
  • Development of strategies for collection, processing, and management of data regarding quantity and composition of secondary raw materials
  • Assessment of recyclability and identification of recycling barriers based on waste stream specific recovery trials and extended batch tests with industrial partners from recycling industries
  • Assessment of availability and accessibility of secondary raw materials in accordance with the United Nations Framework Classification of Resources (UNFC)
  • Development of characterization strategies for secondary raw materials to build a robust and valid data and knowledge basis
  • Documentation and presentation of research results to national and international project partners and at international conferences

Requirements:

- Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in Environmental Science and Engineering, Energy or Process Engineering / Industrial Engineering / Materials Science
- Knowledge and experience in several of the following areas:
  • Circular economy approaches and recycling technologies of electrical and electronic equipment, vehicles, photovoltaic panels, building infrastructure, and other complex products
  • Assessment and management of SRMs with focus on, amongst others, critical elements
  • Statistical analysis and data management, analysis, and interpretation
  • Modeling material flows in society with open programming languages like Python or similar
- Excellent English skills (oral and written) are required and basic knowledge of German to handle administrative tasks in the project are of advantage
- Interest in applied and industrial research including required skills for a successful cooperation

Desirable would be the following experience/knowledge:
  • Recyclability assessment of waste products and secondary raw materials
  • United Nations Framework Classification of Resources (UNFC)
  • Experience in project management
  • Structured and independent way of working
  • Willingness to take responsibility for sub-tasks
  • Ability to work in a team as well as intercultural competencies
