Working field:

The successful applicant will cover research and teaching in the field of general meteorology and synoptic meteorology.

Appointment requirements are governed by Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz – BerIHG).

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a strong record of internationally recognized research of the highest caliber backed by publications in international professional journals. Their research background should be in general meteorology with areas of specialization that are either not yet represented in the department or complement existing areas. In addition, candidates should have experience teaching at the university level in the field of general meteorology and synoptic meteorology, including international teaching experience. Candi-dates also need to be able to demonstrate experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects, especially interdisciplinary projects involving applied meteorology or climatology. They must have excellent knowledge of German or English and be able to teach in the respective language.

Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Section 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:

A key task will be the development and implementation of a promising, internationally visible and externally funded research program with one or more of the following focal points:
1. (Extreme) weather events and their impacts, especially in relation to climate change
2. Applied meteorology and climatology, for example, in the fields of energy meteorology, weather forecasting, or cloud physics.
3. Experimental meteorology, for example, in the field of urban climate research.
The new professor will be expected to teach in the field of general meteorology and synoptic meteorology as part of the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in meteorology, and will also teach in the new international master’s degree program “Climate Change and Impacts.” The role will involve close cooperation with other working groups at the Institute of Meteorology, the Department of Earth Sciences, and the Geo.X network as well as contributing to other national and international research projects, especially those with an interdisciplinary focus. As the appointee is expected to offer courses in German and English candidates must have a keen interest in acquiring the adequate language skills within a period of three years from the date of employment. The new professor will also be expected to address gender and diversity issues in their teaching activities. They will also be in charge of directing the Stadtmessnetz, Berlin’s network of weather observation stations.
