The Junior Research Group of Dr. Grégoire Montavon, part of the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD) headed by Prof. Dr. Klaus-Robert Müller, is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to the group’s research activities and more broadly engage in collaborative projects within BIFOLD.

Working field:

Development of machine learning approaches at the frontier between explainable AI (XAI), model validation, and complex systems. This includes collaboration with applied scientists (especially in medicine and digital humanities) to identify and refine relevant practical use cases, development of scalable machine learning / XAI solutions, and also contribution to the advancement of the foundations of XAI.


  • Successfully completed university degree (master, diplom or equivalent) and PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering or Applied Mathematics
  • Profound knowledge of the foundations of machine learning and deep neural networks.
  • Extensive experience with the training and application of deep neural networks.
  • In depth knowledge of the foundations and techniques of Explainable AI.
  • Knowledge in selected areas such as unsupervised learning (representation learning, generative models) and optimal transport is a plus.
  • Solid programming skills, in particular experience with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow etc.)
  • Several machine learning publications in high profile journals or conferences.
  • Experience with big data and training of ML models on a GPUs is a plus.
  • Interdisciplinary and collaborative project experience is a plus.
  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken English required, knowledge of German desirable or willingness to learn it.
