University Professor - salary grade W3
in the field of "Design and Hetero-Integration of Micro-Electronic Systems".
The position will be filled as a joint appointment and includes the membership of the management of the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and and Microintegration IZM.

Faculty IV - Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is one of the most important faculties of its kind in Germany. This is reflected in its 70 professors, 500 research and teaching assistants and associates, and the 7,500 students currently enrolled there. The 70 members of staff working in the area of “Microperiphic Technologies“ (FSP-TMP) research and develop methods and technologies for electronic packaging using extensive research facilities at the University’s Wedding Campus in north Berlin.
Fraunhofer IZM employs more than 400 staff and is one of the world’s leading research institutes in the areas of design, packaging solutions, and the packaging of microelectronics. Fraunhofer IZM’s mission is to develop robust and reliable solutions on the basis of excellent and continuously developing research and to transfer these solutions to special industrial applications.
Technische Universität Berlin and Fraunhofer IZM have been cooperating together for a number of years in the area of microelectronics. The professorship also includes membership of the management at Fraunhofer IZM, whose duties include both the academic-technical and business management of the institute within the Fraunhofer model and Fraunhofer’s overall strategy.
You can expect a wide range of projects with a high level of practical relevance as well as a high degree of freedom in research.
Research in the design and hetero-integration of micro-electronic systems both in the areas of fundamentals as well as development and application
Contributions to the following research priorities: “Integration Technologies“, “Advanced Packaging Technologies”, “Advanced System Packaging”, “System Reliability”, and “Application of Smart Systems“
Teaching in the academic chair’s master’s programs in Electronics and Information Technology (2 course hours per week)
Membership of the microperiphic technologies research group at TU Berlin’s Faculty IV
Active participation in Fraunhofer-wide committees and co-design of joint research roadmaps
Representing research priorities to funding organizations and research partners
Expanding the strategic connection between the University and Fraunhofer IZM
Further duties include managing and leading the chair’s staff; developing measures to advance junior scholars, women, and social diversity; promoting knowledge and technology transfer; and developing initiatives for internationalization. The successful candidate’s work as head of the chair should reflect their competences in the areas of gender, diversity and sustainability. The post holder is further required to take part in committee work.
Candidates are required to fulfill the criteria for appointment pursuant to Section 100 of the Berlin State Higher Education Act (BerlHG). In-depth knowledge and excellent research in the areas of microelectronics, systems design, and systems integration technologies
Relevant experience in international research regarding the above areas of research as well as solid networks and a good reputation in science and industry
Leadership skills and relevant experience of managing the staff of a large research group (management, leadership, self-competence), particularly skills and experience qualifying the applicant to lead a Fraunhofer institute with over 400 members of staff
Experience of organizing complex projects, applying for third-party funding and major public and industrial projects
Competencies for increasing the efficiency of development processes and in the management of larger research structures (clean rooms) as well as in technology exploitation
Practical experience (for example in industry) is advantageous
Excellent English; non German-speaking applicants are required to be willing to learn German as quickly as possible; lectures have to be hold in German and English
