Die Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin

The Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin is a joint medical faculty, which serves both Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. As one of the largest university hospitals in Europe with an important history, it plays a leading role in research, teaching and clinical care. The Charité university hospital has also made a name for itself as a modern business with certifications in the medical, clinical and management fields.

Multiple PhD positions in Proteomics and Bioinformatics

CC02, Institut für Biochemie

Working field:

Located in the heart of Berlin, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is one of Europe's largest and most research-intensive medical universities. We are looking for several highly enthusiastic PhD students, focusing on either experimental work or bioinformatics, to join the newly established laboratory of Vadim Demichev (funded as part of the National Research Node for Biomedical Mass spectrometry (MSCORESYS), BMBF), located in the Institute of Biochemistry. We are leaders in large-scale proteomics and now routinely use ultra-fast proteomic workflows (analysing 1000+ samples per week per mass spectrometer), which we established in close collaboration with mass spectrometry manufacturers, such as Bruker and Sciex, as well as drug discovery companies.

Use proteomics, phosphoproteomics and ubiquitinomics, with one/several research directions:
  • Investigate the link between ageing, protein turnover (autophagy, UPS) and metabolism (experimental & bioinformatics positions).
  • Identify biomarkers and use machine learning to predict therapy resistance in cancer, in collaborations with clinical-research groups in Charité (experimental & bioinformatics positions).
  • Develop advanced methods for proteomic data analysis (bioinformatics positions).
  • A range of side-project opportunities.

You will get access to:
  • a variety of cutting edge mass spectrometers, LC systems, and liquid handling robotics, from Sciex, Bruker, Thermo, Waters and Agilent, Beckmann and Perkin Elmer;
  • a very collaborative environment, opportunity to work in close contact with other basic- and clinical-research groups in the Charité;
  • opportunity to work in collaborations with industry partners;
  • potential to lead multiple projects and a high degree of academic freedom;
  • support & training in mass spectrometry and/or bioinformatics and machine learning.

Requirements:

Your profile:
  • MSc in basic sciences
  • Productivity documented (published research or excellent grades, internships)
  • good communication skills for collaborative work
Experimental positions:
  • Experimental skills in molecular biology
  • Strong motivation for large-scale experiments and mass spectrometry-based proteomics
Bioinformatics positions:
  • Basic experience in data analysis using R or Python; alternatively a background in maths and proficiency in some other programming language
  • Enthusiasm to handle large datasets
  • Interest in machine learning

Working language is English. Applicants with multidisciplinary background or unusual career paths are also encouraged to apply.
