Our research and project work focuses on systemic, economic and societal considerations of Community Energy, Renewable Energy Transformations and Adaptation to Climate Change. Through critical analysis and an interdisciplinary team of engineers, economists and social scientist, we investigate impactful and sustainable concepts depending on the local needs, priorities and resources. We collaborate with international partners in the areas of research, development cooperation, private sector and public organizations at various levels.
In several projects, we collaborate with the Berlin-based NGO Hudara gGmbH. Hudara is an independent and impartial organization that is committed to people whose lives are affected by poverty, conflict and climate change. The organization’s projects focus on issues such as community development, peaceful coexistence, well-being and mental health, climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as social and environmental justice. The aim of all action is to decentralize debates and interventions, strengthen horizontal lines of communication and work in close collaboration with people of the community and local initiatives. The website of our department at the Technische Universität Berlin is currently not available, due to the aftermath of a cyber-attack. We expect the website to be up and running at the end of 2021.

Funding
The Berlin-based organization Hudara is a consortium and project partner in both, the MAESHA and the ENERGICA project. Due to the close cooperation in the project, great synergies can arise, which will be tapped with the co-financing of this position. Therefore, Hudara gGmbH will fund 20% of this position and Technische Universität Berlin will fund 80% of this position. The funds for this will be provided by Hudara gGmbH to Technische Universität Berlin so that TUB can make a working contract for a 100% job position.

Working field:

The tasks of the vacant position include the scientific investigation of the power grid of Mayotte and other islands through the use of power grid simulations, within the EU-funded research projects "MAESHA" and "ENERGICA". The tasks are carried out in cooperation with Hudara gGmbH, 80% time for the Technical University of Berlin and 20% time for Hudara gGmbH. Based on historical events and forecasted developments, scenarios for the integration of renewable energies into the power grid will be developed and corresponding effects on power grid stability will be mapped and evaluated using defined assessment parameters. The effects of flexibility options as well as different market mechanisms are investigated.

Requirements:

  • successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in engineering with focus on energy technology or comparable orientation; above-average degree desired
  • prior knowledge of rural electrification, integration of renewable energies into power grids, climate resilience of/climate impacts on energy systems
  • sound programming skills
  • very good written and spoken German; very good written and spoken English
  • prior knowledge of the topic of energy transition and decarbonization

Optional Criteria
  • knowledge of French
  • prior knowledge of the Python programming language
  • experience in writing scientific publications
  • experience in participating in international research projects
