BasCat exists since 2011 as a JointLab of the Cluster of Excellence “Unifying Concepts in Catalysis” (UniCat) and the chemical company BASF SE at the Technische Universität Berlin. Its main focus is heterogeneous catalysis as key technique for meeting the challenges of the future: Avoidance of CO2, and efficient generation and usage of H2. The three work groups „Catalyst Synthesis and Surface Modification“, „Catalysis and Reactor Analysis”, and “Catalysis and Modeling” work hand in hand. The partners of BasCat are dedicated to improve our fundamental understanding of heterogeneous catalysis, to transfer this understanding to a new rational design concept for industrially relevant catalysts, and to bring these catalysts to application in industry.
BasCat participates in a project on new resource-efficient plastic recycling technologies from Sep. 2021 on. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team focusing on heterogeneous catalysis and polymer waste recycling. The scientific work consists of evaluation of catalysts performance, as well as design and construction of necessary reactor systems. Additionally, supporting work for reconstruction of existing setups and their evaluations should be provided. The performance of catalysts will be evaluated using parallel screening reactors, transient single reactors and profile reactors. BasCat’s mission is to broaden the fundamental understanding of heterogeneous catalysis with the data collected in catalysis and analytics, and to develop novel catalyst design concepts. The goal in the whole project is to transfer research findings to industrial application on large scale.
Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) and PhD in chemical engineering with above-average success. Expertise in the areas of technical chemistry and reactor design is mandatory. A safe handling of common CAD programs (e.g. Solid Edge, SolidWorks) and modeling tools for reactor engineering (MATLAB, COMSOL, Aspen) is required. Hands-on experience in catalyst testing and maintenance of test set-ups is expected, as well as collecting and evaluating of measured data. You have strong communication skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions by working in multi-disciplinary teams. Experience in guiding coworkers (PhD and MSc students, etc.) and fluency in German and English is considered as a plus.
