The advertised position offers you the opportunity to combine a doctorate in the Hermann Rietschel Institute / Department of Energy, Comfort and Health in Buildings with practical work as an engineer in the construction department of the Technische Universität Berlin in a full-time position.

The Hermann Rietschel Institute / Department of Energy, Comfort and Health in Buildings teaches and researches in the fields of building energy technology, thermal and hygienic comfort and the dispersion of airborne contaminants. It dates back to Hermann Rietschel's appointment at the Königliche Technische Hochschule zu Charlottenburg and is thus the world's oldest department in this field.
Department IV is responsible for the planning, construction, operation, management and administration of the buildings of the Technical University of Berlin. It partly takes over the tasks of the building owner for measures >5 Mio €. To support the construction management you will take over activities of the technical planning in the technical building equipment. You will plan and supervise (partial) construction measures in connection with building maintenance as well as small and large construction measures. In particular, the supervision of external planning offices is one of your tasks.

Working field:

You will mainly work scientifically in the field with the aim of obtaining a doctorate and devote the other part of your working time to practical activities in the Department of Building and Services Management.
Scientific activities:
  • Collaboration in the research work at the department in one of the 3 main research areas
o Building Energy Systems
o Thermal and Hygienic Comfort
o Airborne Pollution
  • Promotion in one of the aforementioned areas
  • General collaboration in the tasks arising at the department
  • teaching duties 2 SWS (hours/week)

Practical work in the field of technical building equipment:
  • Preparation, planning, construction supervision, acceptance and accounting of new constructions, conversions and extensions and construction maintenance in the field of technical building equipment with the focus on sanitary, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, gas and well installations as well as technical installations with the piping systems in the outdoor area
  • Coordination, commissioning of services according to BetrSichV and AnlPrüfVO,
  • Review and definition of safety standards
  • Selection, monitoring and control of freelancers engaged for the performance of tasks with regard to deadlines, costs and quality in order to achieve the project objectives
  • technical advice to the users

Requirements:

General:
  • successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in the field of supply engineering or comparable discipline
  • relevant professional experience in the planning of technical facilities, preferably in large properties
  • relevant experience in the handling of large construction projects in the field of research desirable
  • business fluent written and spoken German (level C 1 or higher), good English language skills are desirable

In terms of scientific activities:
  • in-depth knowledge on a scientific level in one of the aforementioned main research areas.
  • in-depth knowledge on scientific level in the field of:
o CFD simulations (preferably CCM+, openfoam) or
o system simulation (preferably Modelica/ Dymola) or
o experimental test execution
With respect to specialized practical activities:
  • extensive experience in project management and in the acceptance of construction services
  • in-depth knowledge of relevant legal regulations and standards (VDI, DIN/EN standards, AMEV, DGUV andBetrSichV)
  • in-depth knowledge of the implementation and interpretation of VOB, VOL, ABau, VHB, LBO, HOAI, VgV, UVgO
  • knowledge of BetrSichV and BetrVO is desirable
  • very good knowledge of MS Office applications is required and knowledge of AfA programs and CAFM systems is desirable.
  • ability to work in a team as well as coordination and negotiation skills
