Faculty V - Mechanical Engineering and Transport Systems, Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Technical Acoustics / Chair of Numerical Fluid Dynamics

Research Assistant

part-time employment may be possible

Your responsibility

Within the ERC Consolidator Grant ECHO, which investigates thermoacoustic phenomena in hydrogen combustion systems, a 3-year Research Associate (WiMi) position is available. The successful candidate will develop and lead an individual experimental research project while working closely with the Principal lnvestigator, a postdoctoral researcher, other doctoral candidates, and student assistants within an interdisciplinary research team. The research focuses on improving the fundamental understanding of thermoacoustic instabilities in can-annular combustors and developing strategies for their prediction and control, with particular emphasis on hydrogen combustion. A major component of the project is the completion of the design, commissioning, and operation of a novel can-annular combustion test rig. The candidate will contribute to the mechanical and acoustic design of the facility using CAD and engineering simulation tools (e.g., COMSOL), support its commissioning, and further develop the experim·ental platform. Following commissioning, the candidate will design and conduct combustion experiments using optical and flow diagnostic techniques, analyze and interpret experimental data, develop software for data acquisition and post-processing, and develop models that improve the understanding of the underlying physical processes. Research results will be disseminated through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international scientific conferences.Applicants should submit a single PDF file containing (i) a motivation letter, (ii) a curriculum vitae, (iii) transcripts of academic records, and (iv) an MSc degree certificate or, if the degree has not yet been awarded, the expected date of completion.

Your profile

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Demonstrated practical experience in experimental fluid mechanics and/or combustion research, evidenced by laboratory work, a Master's thesis, research projects, or equivalent activities
  • Demonstrated experience in mechanical design using professional CAD software
  • Proven experience with engineering simulation and scientific programming tools (e.g., COMSOL, MATLAB1 Python) arid/or combustion software (e.g., Cantera, CHEMKIN)
  • Good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills
  • Experience in developing software for laboratory automation and data acquisition using LabVIEW desirable
  • The ability to work independently as weil as collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research environment desirable
