Faculty V - Mechanical Engineering and Transport Systems, Institute of Land and Sea Transport / Department of Autonomous and Energy-Efficient Maritime Technologies

Research Associate (PostDoc)

part-time employment may be possible

About us

The research activities of the Autonomous and Energy-Efficient Maritime Technologies group focus on multiphase flows within the maritime domain. Key areas of interest include cavitation phenomena and free-surface flows, specifically sloshing, ventilation, and wave-structure-interaction. Methodologically, the department employs both numerical and experimental methods. The numerical methods include Navier-Stokes solvers (such as OpenFOAM) coupled with nonlinear equations of motion and solvers for structural dynamics. This spectrum is complemented by boundary element methods, molecular dynamics methods, and data-driven approaches used alongside classical physics-based models. For experimental re-search, the department operates several testing facilities. These primarily include the K27 circulation and cavitation tank, the UT2 circulation tank (currently decommissioned), and the deep and shallow water towing tanks.
The position is related to a DFG-funded project focused on the further development of an Euler-Lagrange method for investigating combined passive-active control of cavitating flows on hydrofoils. A development base in OpenFOAM is already available. In a parallel project, experiments are being conducted whose results will serve to validate the aforementioned numerical method.

Your responsibility

  • Further development, validation, and application of an Euler-Lagrange method for investigating combined passive-active control of cavitating flows around hydrofoils
  • Implementation of the developed models in OpenFOAM
  • Documentation and publication of the results in international peer-reviewed journals

Your profile

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) and PhD in Mechanical Engineering or Physics with a focus on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Excellent knowledge in the development and application of multiphase flow models, preferably in the field of cavitation
  • Experience in development within OpenFOAM
  • Programming skills in Python and/or C/C++
  • Prior scientific experience is desirable (e.g., experience in conducting systematic scientific research, scientific documentation, and the publication of research results)
  • Good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills

What we offer

  • a diverse range of tasks in a research-intensive, and topical environment
  • an interesting and responsible position with a high degree of autonomy
  • a non-discriminatory work environment characterized by respect and mutual appreciation
  • opportunity for further scientific qualification (e.g., Habilitation)
  • a pleasant working atmosphere and a wide range of continuing education and professional development opportunities
