About us

The core research focuses of the Department of Autonomous and Energy-Efficient Maritime Technologies are the maneuvering, seakeeping, and propulsion of ships and offshore structures, as well as the development of offshore energy systems. A particular focus is placed on multiphase flows within a maritime context. These include cavitation, ventilation, and sloshing. Methodologically, the department employs both numerical and experimental methods. The numerical methods include Navier-Stokes solvers (such as OpenFOAM) coupled with nonlinear equations of motion and solvers for structural dynamics. This spectrum is complemented by boundary element methods, molecular dynamics methods, and data-driven approaches used alongside classical physics-based models. For experimental research, the department operates several testing facilities. These primarily include the K27 circulation and cavitation tank at the Severin site, the UT2 circulation tank on the Schleuseninsel (currently decommissioned), and the deep and shallow water towing tanks. To further expand research capacities, the procurement and operation of a sloshing facility and a laser laboratory are planned.

Your responsibility

  • development and application of numerical methods and data-driven models in hydrodynamics (dynamics of ships and offshore energy systems, cavitation, etc.)
  • grant writing and application for research projects within the aforementioned context
  • regular publication of research results in international peer-reviewed journals
  • conducting lectures and courses in both German or English
  • supervision of student theses (Bachelor’s and Master’s)
  • assisting in the establishment of a research group focused on the modeling and development of numerical methods in hydrodynamics and fluid-structure interaction

Your profile

  • successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Engineering Mathematics, preferably related to ship and Offshore Engineering
  • in-depth knowledge of general and numerical fluid dynamics (CFD)
  • extensive experience in the development of numerical methods and mathematical models in fluid dynamics
  • extensive experience in CFD (specifically OpenFOAM and StarCCM+)
  • experience with molecular dynamics and potential theory methods
  • excellent programming skills in Python and C/C++
  • experience in authoring scientific publications in international journals and project reports
  • sufficient language proficiency to teach classes in German and/or English is required; willingness to learn either English oder German is expected
  • experience in project execution and project management

What we offer

  • a diverse range of tasks in a research-intensive, and topical environment
  • an interesting and responsible position with a high degree of autonomy
  • a non-discriminatory work environment characterized by respect and mutual appreciation
  • a pleasant working atmosphere and a wide range of continuing education and professional development opportunities
