About us

Collaborative Research Centre 1265 "Re-Figuration of Spaces," which has been funded by the
German Research Foundation (DFG) at Technische Universität Berlin since 2018, investigates changes
in the socio-spatial order observed since the late 1960s. The advertised position is part of the new
subproject D "Understanding – Explaining – Designing: Theory and Practice of Re-Figuration," which
will be running in the third funding phase (2026-2029). It aims to develop a model based on spatial
theory to explain and understand processes of spatial reorganization and restructuring of modern
contemporary societies. The successful candidate will coordinate the development of the
explanatory model and will be responsible for the theoretical finalization of the spatial figure
analysis.

Your responsibility

  • Synthesis of previous research data from the CRC subprojects relating to the process of explanation
    through spatial analyses
  • Independent development of models for relating spatial figures in close cooperation with the
    project management, the Explanation Working Group, and the CRC subprojects
  • Organization and publication of the results of internal workshops and international conferences
  • Writing papers explaining qualitative sociology and spatial foundations of re-figuration theory,
    disseminating research results to the international professional community
  • Actively shaping cooperation with cooperation partners
  • Coordination of the CRC publication series published by Routledge and transcript Verlag (cross-CRC
    task)

Your profile

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) and very good PhD in the field of sociology or social sciences
  • Research focus on urban, spatial, and architectural sociology
  • Very good knowledge of sociological theory as demonstrated by publications (especially spatial
    theory and sensemaking theories), interpretative methodology of empirical social research, and the
    theory construction of CRC 1265 to date
  • Experience in international and interdisciplinary cooperation in collaborative research
  • Experience in editing anthologies in the field of spatial sociology
  • Good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills.
  • Knowledge of urban and regional planning desirable
  • Experience in organizing workshops and conferences desirable
  • Research focus in subjectivation research desirable
