The pos­i­tion includes the role of head of the depart­ment „Extra­solar Plan­ets and Atmo­spheres“ at the DLR Insti­tute for Plan­et­ary Research, Ber­lin-Adler­shof. The holder of the pos­i­tion rep­res­ents the area of „Plan­et­ary Phys­ics with focus on extra­solar plan­ets“ in teach­ing at the Centre for Astro­nomy and Astro­phys­ics at TU Ber­lin. The reg­u­lar teach­ing oblig­a­tion is 2 course hours per week. Work­ing at the DLR ful­fils the oblig­a­tion for research at TU Ber­lin.
The Insti­tute for Plan­et­ary Research engages in the explor­a­tion of plan­ets, moons and small bod­ies in our solar sys­tem. Main focus are sci­entific ques­tions about the form­a­tion and devel­op­ment as well as the hab­it­ab­il­ity of plan­ets and moons. The Insti­tute par­ti­cip­ates in inter­na­tional sci­entific satel­lite mis­sions of ESA, NASA and JAXA (amongst oth­ers the mis­sions Bepi­Colombo, CHEOPS, Comet Inter­ceptor, Exo­Mars, JUICE, MMX, PLATO). In the future this pos­i­tion shall strengthen in par­tic­u­lar the con­nec­tion between the char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion of extra­solar plan­ets and planet pop­u­la­tions with the know­ledge about plan­et­ary evol­u­tion pro­cesses and small bod­ies in the solar sys­tem.

Can­did­ates must ful­fil the require­ments for appoint­ment at the pro­fessor level in com­pli­ance with § 100 Ber­lHG (Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act), includ­ing a fin­ished aca­demic edu­ca­tion in phys­ics or a com­par­able dis­cip­line, qual­i­fied achieve­ments in research (usu­ally proven by a PhD in phys­ics or a com­par­able dis­cip­line), addi­tional sci­entific and ped­ago­gical didactic qual­i­fic­a­tions, demon­strated by teach­ing exper­i­ence and visu­al­ized in a teach­ing port­fo­lio (for fur­ther inform­a­tion see TUB Web­site, quick access 144242).

We are search­ing for a sci­ent­ist with excel­lent know­ledge and exper­i­ence in at least one of the fol­low­ing sci­entific fields:

• Detec­tion of extra­solar plan­ets and stud­ies of planet pop­u­la­tions,
• Char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion of extra­solar plan­ets (atmo­spheres, com­pos­i­tion, internal struc­ture, hab­it­ab­il­ity) and exo­plan­et­ary sys­tems (form­a­tion pro­cesses),
• Mar­ginal con­di­tions for the pro­cesses of planet form­a­tion from the stud­ies on plan­ets/aster­oids/comets of the solar sys­tem.

Exper­i­ence in acquis­i­tion of third party fund­ing as well as national and inter­na­tional exper­i­ence in pro­ject work and man­age­ment should be present. Teach­ing exper­i­ence and the abil­ity to lead a depart­ment with 20 employ­ees are expec­ted.

TU Ber­lin and DLR expect from their pro­fess­ors the abil­ity to take respons­ib­il­ity for lead­er­ship and stra­tegic devel­op­ment of their depart­ment and their employ­ees. This also includes engage­ment in the pro­mo­tion of young research­ers and females, gender and diversity com­pet­en­cies in the sense of cre­at­ing diversity sens­ible work and study con­di­tions and sub­stan­cial set­ting of impulses in research and teach­ing as well as par­ti­cip­a­tion in the aca­demic admin­is­tra­tion of the uni­versity. Inter­dis­cip­lin­ary cooper­a­tions, ini­ti­at­ives in sci­ence com­mu­nic­a­tion as well as in know­ledge and tech­no­logy trans­fer are desired. As an inter­na­tional recog­nized uni­versity and research insti­tute good know­ledge of the Eng­lish lan­guage is expec­ted. Applic­a­tions from Non-Ger­man speak­ing applic­ants will­ing to learn Ger­man are expli­citly wel­come.
