Ten­ure-Track-Pro­fess­or­ship, remu­ner­a­tion group W1, fixed term, to be con­tin­ued as a life­time pro­fess­or­ship, remu­ner­a­tion group W3,

in “Spa­tial Soci­ology”.

This pro­fess­or­ship should be seen in the con­text of Tech­nis­che Uni­versität Ber­lin’s goal to recruit and advance junior schol­ars in the very early stage of their career. The ten­ure track pro­fess­or­ship is ini­tially lim­ited to three years. The pos­i­tion shall be renewed for a fur­ther three years con­di­tional upon the pos­tholder’s per­form­ance and agree­ment. After six years, as a rule, a lifelong pro­fess­or­ship will be offered con­di­tional upon the ful­fill­ment of the determ­ined eval­u­ation cri­teria and hir­ing require­ments for a lifelong pro­fess­or­ship. Work­ing field:

The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate is required to teach and under­take research into soci­ology with a focus on spa­tial soci­ology and rep­res­ent the sub­ject in its broad­est sense on the level of soci­olo­gical the­or­ies or meth­ods. Act­ive involve­ment in Col­lab­or­at­ive Research Cen­ter 1265 “Re-fig­ur­a­tion of Spaces” is of par­tic­u­lar import­ance. The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate is expec­ted to pur­sue research into soci­olo­gical spa­tial the­ory in addi­tion to empir­ical spa­tial research.

Within research, emphasis is to be placed on inter­dis­cip­lin­ary and inter­cul­tural cooper­a­tion as well as on com­mu­nic­a­tion between sci­ence and prac­tice.

It is pre­ferred that applic­ants have research exper­i­ence in urban soci­ology and/or inequal­ity research/social struc­ture ana­lysis. Inequal­ity research is under­stood to include post-colo­nial the­ory and gender research. Should the can­did­ate have not yet pur­sued a research focus in urban and/or inequal­ity soci­ology, they are expec­ted to develop such a research focus in the future.

Teach­ing will focus on the rel­ev­ant com­puls­ory and com­puls­ory elect­ive mod­ules in the “Soci­ology and Tech­no­logy Stud­ies”, and “Urban and Regional Plan­ning” bach­elor’s and mas­ter’s pro­grams. The pos­i­tion holder is fur­ther required to under­take addi­tional teach­ing duties within the fac­ulty as well to per­form duties relat­ing to aca­demic self-admin­is­tra­tion.

Will­ing­ness to par­ti­cip­ate in inter­dis­cip­lin­ary pro­jects address­ing spa­tial issues, par­tic­u­larly in cooper­a­tion with the Insti­tute of Urban and Regional Plan­ning at TU Ber­lin, is expec­ted as is a will­ing­ness to work on estab­lish­ing research links to the Uni­versity’s main research areas (par­tic­u­larly in engin­eer­ing dis­cip­lines). Given the import­ance of innov­a­tion as a research area within the Insti­tute of Soci­ology, research interest in this area is also expec­ted. Par­ti­cip­a­tion in inter­na­tional com­mit­tees and research groups is required.

Require­ments:

Applic­ants must ful­fill the hir­ing require­ments pur­su­ant to Sec­tion 102c Ber­lin State Higher Edu­ca­tion Act in com­bin­a­tion with Sec­tion 102a Ber­lin State Higher Edu­ca­tion Act. Of par­tic­u­lar import­ance are a uni­versity degree in soci­ology, a strong aptitude for research demon­strated, as a rule, by an out­stand­ing doc­tor­ate in soci­ology as well as teach­ing skills demon­strated by a teach­ing port­fo­lio (for fur­ther inform­a­tion, see Tech­nis­che Uni­versität Ber­lin´s web­site: https://www.tu-berlin.de/menue/einrichtungen/praesidium/projekte_des_praesidiums/neuberufene/berufungsportal/bewerbung/lehrportfolio/parameter/en/).

The pos­i­tion holder should be sup­por­ted in the field of spa­tial soci­ology by rel­ev­ant pub­lic­a­tions.

Applic­ants must be able to con­duct teach­ing in Ger­man and Eng­lish. The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate is expec­ted to assume respons­ib­il­ity for lead­ing a research group and man­aging its staff, should pos­sess the requis­ite skills for the advance­ment of junior schol­ars and women and in the area of gender and diversity, as well as show act­ive com­mit­ment to know­ledge and tech­no­logy trans­fer and sci­ence com­mu­nic­a­tion.

Exper­i­ence in the acquis­i­tion of third-party fund­ing is desired.
