The Process Dynamics and Operations Group is looking for a new colleague for an exciting new project (funding decision pending) on characterization of fluid dynamics and coupled mass transfer in falling liquid films on structured packings. Within a DFG project, a detailed description of the multi-phase flow and present mass transfer for micro structured surfaces is aimed for, using direct numerical simulation (DNS) based on the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes equation.
Specific tasks within the project are:
Systematic analysis of the influence of single and periodically applied micro structures on the absorption of gaseous compounds in falling liquid films via DNS
Extension of an existing fluid dyn. model regarding mass transfer and local phase equilibria
Development of a suitable solution framework for simulations (Python)
The multidisciplinary group is based in chemical engineering, but candidates from other engineering disciplines or backgrounds are always welcome. Regarding the described position, we are interested in colleagues with the following qualifications and interests:
successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in energy and process engineering, applied mathematics, mechanical engineering with focus on fluid mechanics or alike; above average degree desired
knowledge on fluid dynamics, coupled with energy and mass transfer phenomena, as well as on numerical mathematics and solution methods
programming skills are mandatory
ideally, knowledge on direct numerical simulations and implementation of solution methods in Python using e.g.: FEniCS, PETSc, Docker
good command of German and/or English required; the willingness to learn either English or German is expected
