Technische Universität Berlin - Faculty III - Institute of Materials Sciences and Technologies / Materials Engineering

Research Assistant (PhD candidate) - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

under the reserve that funds are granted - part-time employment may be possible

Working field:

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student/research assistant for our DFG-funded project "Multi length-scale characterisation of microstructure/geometry interactions for tailoring properties of open-cell Al alloy foams". Together with our project partner, the Foundry Institute of RWTH Aachen, we aim at understanding micro-, meso- and macrostructural contributions to the mechanical behaviour of Al-based open-cell metal foams. The team at TU Berlin is responsible for the mechanical characterisation of struts, cell and foam specimens and for the characterisation of load-induced microstructural changes. Specifically, the position comprises the following tasks:
  • development and design of advanced, non-standard testing techniques
  • performing ex situ and in situ tension/bending/compression tests, including specimen preparation
  • analysis and evaluation of the results using analytical, numerical and theoretical approaches
  • transmission and high resolution scanning electron microscopy, including specimen preparation, of mechcanically loaded states
  • development of the theoretical and scientific fundamentals of the research work
  • current up-date of the state of the art, including literature research and evaluation
  • preparation of manuscripts for publication of the results in highly rated scientific journals
  • preparation of abstracts and presentation of the results in national and international conferernces
  • active participation in project meetings and preparation of the necessary documents and reports
The future team members shall further take part in administrative, organisational and public relation tasks within the project.
PhD thesis preparation is possible.

Requirements:

  • Successfully completed scientific university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in materials science, mechanical engineering or similar disciplines;
  • experience and talent in performing scientific experiments;
  • deep interest in the development and characterisation of light metal foams;
  • keen interest and skill in the development, design and performing of non-standard mechanical testing set-ups;
  • structured working, organisational skills and good time management;
  • ability and keen interest to work in an interdisciplinary, intercultural team, sense of responsibility and reliability;
  • very good knowledge of English in writing and speaking, specifically excellent skills in writing scientific texts and in the oral presentation of scientific results;
  • very good knowledge in German or basic knowledge and keen interest to improve German speaking skills to a level allowing technical discussions with other team embers;
  • keen interest in achieving a doctorate;
  • willingness for national and international working travel, especially to project meetings at RWTH Aachen
