The DFG-fun­ded pro­ject "Ana­lysis of max­imum a pos­teri­ori estim­at­ors: Com­mon con­ver­gence the­or­ies for Bayesian and vari­ational inverse prob­lems" aims to advance the state of the art in rig­or­ous math­em­at­ical under­stand­ing of MAP estim­at­ors in infin­ite-dimen­sional stat­ist­ical inverse prob­lems. As part of this pro­ject, a postdoc­toral researcher is sought for a pos­i­tion to last two years.

Research assist­ant (postdoc) (m/f/d)

Work­ing field:

The postdoc­toral researcher will con­duct math­em­at­ical research into the defin­i­tion and ana­lysis of MAP estim­at­ors in infin­ite-dimen­sional spaces, in the spirit of the "small balls" approach pion­eered by Dashti, Law, Stu­art, and Voss. The aim is to develop a math­em­at­ical struc­ture that links the con­ver­gence the­ory for MAP estim­at­ors to the fully Bayesian approach.



Doc­tor­ate in math­em­at­ics or stat­ist­ics

Read­i­ness for math­em­at­ical research at the inter­face of meas­ure the­ory and vari­ational cal­cu­lus. It is desir­able that the can­did­ate's PhD topic be closely related to Bayesian non-para­met­ric stat­ist­ics, inverse prob­lems, or the cal­cu­lus of vari­ations. Pro­gram­ming skills are not essen­tial but advant­age­ous, and will open up addi­tional research dir­ec­tions within the pro­ject.
